Bought a console off CL for $25.00 . Sylvania model 4705M console stereo made in 1958 or 1959 . Looks like it could use a friend , as in a companion speaker . Any one recognize it ? Ever seen a companion speaker for it ? It has an rca plug on the back for an amplified speaker . Have been using a fisher speaker I have for the stereo . Also some pics of the Fisher system We just picked up at a thrift store for $30.00 . Nice deal ???? Yeah , but they all need a little maintenance . The sylvania sports a 15 , 2 x 10s and a tweeter or two . Maybe I'll have to build a friend .

Nice. I like those old 2 piece early stereo consoles. Not really sure why, but I find them more interesting than later "coffin" types for the most part.

So you see the pics of the Fisher and the Sylvania ....We also have an Airline and now two Magnavox consoles . All tubed except the Airline . It's beautiful though . I'll post a pic of it . Just picked up the 2nd Maggie today . I say we because my girlfriend and I have been on the hunt for a record player to spin some of our old neglected vinyl . So the quest for a turntable began . I have been building guitar amps out of old organ pulls for about 5 years now and occaisionally run across the odd console . Usually part them out and sell on fleabay to make pocket money . I let her know that and now we have 5 consoles . 5 consoles and not one record player works . Always loved the way the Maggies sounded , the Sylvania just looks as cool as can be with the little lightning bolt S on the front but by far the best sounding one is The Fisher . I probably have seven turntables with what came with the consoles I just mentioned and stuff from other pulls . How hard is it to recondition these things ? How many consoles is too many ?

Here is a pic of the newest Maggie . It has the el84 x 4 amp . The other Maggie looks similar to the little one in the second pic and has the same little single ended amp in it in the third pic .

Most record changers are not that hard to rebuild if someone hasn't physically damaged them. Usually just the grease gums up and needs to be cleaned out and replaced. If its more involved, maybe the idler wheel has petrified and needs a rebuild. The grease you can handle yourself, the idler wheel you can send to someone for about 35-40 bucks to be good for another 40 years or so. If it needs a cartridge, those can usually be had and the needles are available for not much on ebay or whatever. I've done a number of Garrards myself and other than the grease and one idler wheel I haven't had any other issues. I did a Webcor once too, same deal but it still needs an idler wheel. Duals I'm told are a lot more complex inside but I've never fooled with one. Magnavox usually used Collaro changers, which are decent and supposedly fairly simple to rebuild and a lot of others used Voice Of Music which are quite simplistic. VOM parts are also readily available directly from the company.

Thanks Gadget for that info . What do you use to clean grease ? WD40 , electronics cleaner ...???? What about sluggish motors ?
