Tandberg 3011a repairs

I found your forum searching out repairs for my 3011a. Does anyone know where I can get it repaired? It's been a while since I've turned it on. All of the preset buttons don't do anything and I removed the bottom cover and the battery shows signs of leakage. Seems like common issues with this unit. I bought it new in 1985 or so. Is it worth fixing? I'm near Phila, Pa. Thanks.

If its just the battery leakage and presets, it is definitely worth fixing. Look for approved audio in litchfield Connecticut

Mark, my new to me Tandberg 3011 tuner arrived yesterday. Unpacked it plugged it in to the system and pushed on. So far so good. As soon as I touch the tuner man dial control knob I get a stronger signal, when I remove my hand from knob the signal goes to 0. Any suggestions as to whats happening here. Thanks.

Yes. Turn off the Servo switch, and try that again. Make sure you're not changing from preset to manual tune, also.

How these work is that the tuner uses an auto-tune circuit in two different ways. The Servo (similar to AFC) circuit tries to lock the tuning into the center of the nearest reasonably strong signal. If you tune slightly off station (manually) and switch on Servo, the tuner should lock onto the station and signal strength may improve as well. Preset tuning is similar but stores the tuned frequency voltages in a register where they can be recalled later. When you're in preset tune mode, the one meter changes function to display the preset frequency. There's a small scale along the bottom of that meter that has the frequency numbers.

In both cases, touching the tuning knob disengages the circuit so you drop out of Servo (and the meters can react to that) or out of preset tuning mode, back to manual tune mode.

Try it again after reading this, should make sense if it's working correctly. If it doesn't work as described, you may need an alignment or it may need other repairs. Bad preset switches will interfere with trying to tune manually, for instance.

Hello!

I see how old this thread is, but maybe this will wake it up...

I just found a 3011A, which is remarkably good sounding. However, the tuning knob is very slow, and at certain points stops moving between stations. I thought I would take a look inside to see if it's a simple problem with the string being caught that I might be able to fix.

Embarrassing, and due to very little experience working on gear, I don't know which of the sets of screws to loosen to get inside. Rather than unscrewing stuff at random and creating another problem I thought I'd reach out here for a little guidance. Thanks!

loosen but don't remove the 2 allen head grub screws in the top rear, slide the rear top panel towards the back and lift out from the front. Then remove the 2 hex head screws on the remaining top panel, lift out.

Thanks so much. Are these the screws? Sorry, I'm not great at nomenclature of parts.

I have a vague recollection that the Soundsmith company that makes phono cartridges also services Tandberg tuners.

Been a while since I've seen one. Think you just need to loose the back panel screws. The top is two pieces. One the screws are loose. You can slide the rear piece back and lift out. Then the front piece will come off. Remember having a bit of difficulty figuring it out the first time.

Yes, in your first picture (3618) it's the little Allen grub screws that need to be loosened. Once that's done, as Mike says you can slide the larger part of the top cover backwards far enough to lift the front of the panel up. Leave the ones on the side panels alone for now, they don't need to be removed for normal repairs. The ones in pic 3620 are two of the four you remove to take the faceplate off, the other two are on top and will be exposed after you've removed that larger panel first.

Be aware that there are LOTS of little parts that will try and launch or fall out and try to hide the first time you take the faceplate off, so I'd leave that alone unless necessary.

If you drop your email in a private conversations thread with me, I'll send you over a couple of instruction sheets for getting the tuner apart and typical part replacement work to do along with other repairs to look at while you're inside the tuner.

John, I'm so pleased you're still around! I've been reading old posts but can't seem to find my problem. My 3001 goes to presets whenever I take my finger off the manual tune knob. The negative battery holder is broken off and I can't set presets anyway because the station is gone the moment I quit touching the tuning knob. I don't know if the lack of a battery is what causes the other problem. I'm wondering if I can disable the presets entirely and just use manual tune? How would I do this?

Thanks so much! It's been set aside until I had more guidance which I'm grateful for. I'm such a rookie on AK I haven't figured out how to send a private convo. I might get in touch via eBay, where I'm goddboxx.
