Tannoy Cornetta's with Reds

Audio Pinhead
These popped up on Craig's yesterday and I sweated out the rest of the day hoping they would still be there today. Thank goodness for the holiday weekend.

Nice older couple has owned these since new. Been in storage for last 15 years. She played in an ochestra out in CA years ago a was a music head from the sounds of it. She looked very torn on selling these, but she was glad to hear I will be holding on to them and putting them to good use.

They have 10" Red Dual Contentric drivers in a horn loaded cabinet. Great shape on the veneer, just a few dings. Cain grill is stained, any thoughts on how to clean them? The drivers look brand spanking new and sound very sweet.

Only info on these Tannoy's I could find was on Hi-Fi Lit, nothing else. Must be a rare bird.

I can't say how happy I am, now I just need to get them in from the garage.

Gary,

That's super! :tresbon:

Let us know how they sound once you get them hooked up. They do look very nice!

On cleaning the grills. I seem to remember reading about folks having good luck with steaming the grill cloth then blotting/vacuuming off.

If all else fails, or you'd just like some new ones, these folks have lots of fabric:

Enjoy :thmbsp:

Wow, that has to be the score of the year!!!....... I am so happy for you ej..
I love me some Tannoy's  We need a full account of everything.
Have you ever considered a coaxial exchange program. I figure with what you I and Jason come up with it might be kinda cool. I'm sure there are others as well....
Have fun, and once again congrats on a fantastic find..

Great find Gary - congratulations!

I'd love to hear those, make sure you let us know how they sound.

To add to the story, I just recieved a call from the woman I bought them from. She wants to come over and have a listen when they get hooked up in the room.

Quote "I want to hear them one last time."

I think she is going to really miss these speakers. I'm glad I was there for the catch.

I like the swap idea, but I think you guys have the better drivers.

I bet those will sound great. Congrats!!! So, did you get them for a good price? Spill the beans man, inquiring minds wanna know.

Just make very sure whatever you put in there is designed for a folded horn cabinet. IMO, a major sin to alter those in any way.

Here is a picture of the driver out of the cabinet.

I'll keep you posted on the sound of them as I get them going cleaning them up. I'm going to run them on a Marantz 1060 that someone is coming over to take a look at.

As far as price goes, they were listed at $400 and thats all I'll say. It was a deal for me to finally run down a pair of Tannoys.

Gary

The Tannoy's won't be going anywhere, don't worry. The only mod that may happen is the grill cloth.

Very nice horn construction. I'll take a picture while the driver is out to give you an idea on how tight the construction was back in the 60's.

Gary

Caught those right away yesterday. Did a little research and couldn't find hardly a word regarding them? Decided I wouldn't know what I'd even do with them other than taking up more space that I don't have?

Since they're 20 watters, is the sole intended purpose to use these with tube amps?

Hey, is that driver sitting on a Sansui receiver? Perhaps the $25 'garage system' score from CL also yesterday?

Tubes it is. I have several canidates. Dynaco ST-70 for now. Also have a Pilot integrated, Stromberg integrated and a Sherwood integrated that will find there way in the system at various times.

Yes that is the Sansui garage system reciever. I bought it for a buddy, who had gone out and bought a POS at Best Buy and now dosen't want it. I guess its something else to hide in the basement. Needs all the bulbs but the stereo light replaced. Not a bad looking unit. I would be more excited about it if the Tannoys weren't sitting in fron of me.

Brudha, you live in the cities? Where you at?

Gary

Man, give your fingers some rest from the mouse and refresh button once in a while! :D It's like all-out war sometimes in the Twin Cites area competing with all the other local AK'rs.

Caught that one an hour too late evidently. IGH is but 5 minutes from me too. Was that a G-3500 or what? Were the speakers included also?

I'm probably 10 miles from you.........

It is a G-3000 nothing to special I don't think. It may find its way to the shop, but if it doesn't, you will be first in line. Like I said I didn' need it, but now I have it.

Any ideas on the bulbs I'll be needing to get it cleaned up. It looks to be in very good shape other than that.

The speakers are some funky local maufacturer, the name escapes me at the moment.

New baby in the house affords me lots of time at home for the next few months, but the Tannoy's have streched the budget for a while.

Not sure exactly since I don't have a G-3000, but my guess is there's one bulb for the two meters and another bulb on the left hand side lighting the display. The left-side bulbs also powers the little, 'green' power-on light. Real simple deal........

These are the bulbs you need to solder in from dwojo.

Here are some internal shots. Hard to get a good view, but you'll get the idea. The routed hole is for the back of the driver. It is in tight quarters. Crossover as well.

First listen with a Marantz 1060 and lousy Sony CDP. Wow :thmbsp: , everything I remember about Tannoys. Great detail, lightning fast and killer realism, and thats listening in the basement shop on concrete floors. Add tubes and I think I'm done for a long while.

Scrape and finish the cabinets and clean the grills and tha Karlsons will find their way to the basement.

Aha, Cableguy I'm shipping the Karlson's as the first swap item, you pay shipping. :D

I'll keep you posted.

Gary

Nice! Very nice!

Tannoys, like a lot of British speakers, have their strength in the midrange. Fantastic vocals, too!

Enjoy!
