Tannoy HPD385 vs HPD385A

Hello,

Can someone tell me the difference between these two: Tannoy HPD385 and the 385A version?
I've searched the Hilberink Tannoy site but I couldn't find any detailed info. It says the X-overs are different and the units are quite different too, but they don't say a word what the differences are! :scratch2:

I'm probably just adding more to the confusion here, Martin, but my recollection is that all the "A" designated was an HPD mounted in a Tannoy enclosure, rather than a driver sold unmounted; hence, a loose HPD-385 is just an HPD-385, in a Berkeley cabinet it becomes a Loudspeaker System HPD-385A.

I seem to remember reading this somewhere, but can't recall where or when, so maybe it never happened. My only real evidence in support of this theory is a pair of Eatons I own. The only marking on the drivers themselves is HPD-295/8 (ohms), but on the back of each cabinet is the designation Loudspeaker System HPD-295/A. So... what do I have? It seems like it's one thing in and another out.


No doubt somebody who knows more than I do will be along shortly to unmuddy the waters.

Well, that's interesting. But why the different crossovers?
I have also found one more difference: the non A ersion has 8 mounting holens in place of 4 on the A version.

I've heard there was sometimes a bit of overlap between Tannoy models, so I suppose it's possible the earliest HPD-385s could've used leftover 15" Gold frames, which would explain the eight mounting holes. As to the crossovers, I guess there could be some overlap there as well.

I beleive the Gold crossovers were used initially, as well as the frames. The later crossovers were modified a bit to better mach the different measurements of the drivers.
