Tannoy SGM 10b - To buy or not to buy

Vintage Good....BPC BAD!
Hey all,
I've got a chance to buy some of these speakers locally but I have no idea what they're worth.
The asking price is $1000 Canadian - is this a deal or a bust? If anyone has any opinions on how much they ARE worth, I'd appreciate the input.
I really like the dual-concentric sound, and I know these Tannoys do have dual concentric construction, but I think they're an updated version and I don't know if that makes them better, worse or just different than their vintage predecessors.
I've managed to find a very small amount of info on the web but not enough to satisfy my curiosity about this model.
Cheers,
-Paul

Find out exactly what model number of driver is in it, then look for the Tannoy Yahoo group, someone there will know. Also try the history section on the Tannoy wesite -it might list what is supposed to be in them.

I think these have the single ceramic magnet. If so the treble horn is shorter, which is better for phase-alignment at the crossover frequency, but sounds different than the longer horn in the alnico versions. The die-hard tube/vintage fans will spit at these (not Alnico), but studio-heads will be jealous...

That kind of money can get you a newer pair of DMT-10s or 12s (or15s with good luck) if you look around (still ceramic, different tweeter 'horn'), or an older pair 12" Alnico HPDs in Cheviot cabinets.... Can you a listen and see if you like them - if you do then is the $1000C worth it to you?? (I'd try to get them for $800C, if I had the $, and needed them....I think they would sell for about $600US on eBay)
hope this helps a little...

i have both Alnico's 12 reds and 12 golds and these SGM 10B, the 10B is likely one of the best speakers i have ever heard ! I also have System 6, T12 and V8's non Alnico's , SGM 10B has the nicest presentation of all.
