I have a line on a Tascam 48 reel to reel and I’m looking for any information I can about them. What I do know is they use 1/2” tapes, are 8 track and professional decks. That’s the extent of what I know. Anything else anybody can add will be greatly appreciated.

I would go to HiFiEngine and download the user\maintenance manual. Sign up if you don't have an account-it's free and they don't spam.

I bet a lot of your questions will be answered. In good operating condition, they are very good decks, if you need 8 channels and can stomach the price of tape. Being aimed at the pro market, it may well have seen considerable use, so head condition needs to be considered. Relapping of the heads can cost you as much as a solid consumer level 1/4" quarter track machine, and such a machine will allow recording a stereo source on each direction of tape.

Tascam was Teac's pro line of R2R's

Been a member of HFE for about 15 years. Downloaded the manual yesterday but it’s not going to get printed. It’s 143 pages. HFE didn’t have the service manual. So far the Tasacm 48 needs the pinch wheel and counter wheel rebuilt. They have both turned to tar. As soon as I get them rebuilt I can try playing and recording on a tape to see what else it needs. It’s going to be a work in progress for a long time. Once I get it sorted out it’s going up for sale because that is the reason I bough it. Don’t need a 1/2” professional deck. My 1/4” Akai is just fine

Thanks for your input. Much appreciated!
