Technics SL 1600 MK2 Dust Cover question:

I know the 1200 MK 2 bubble cover will fit the older 1600 MK 2 but is a bit lower. But I'm wondering about the hinges. I believe I read on the thread search here that (1) some modification to the 1600's lower hinge (elongation) is needed where the hinge mounts to the body and (2) I believe IIRC that it was a a direct fit needing no modification. Can anybody confirm what is correct? ................How much lower is the newer bubble cover, anyway?
I looked at the aftermarket covers but they use a seam weld process and the front "slant" angle is missing, it's all 90 degree whereas the Technics covers are injection molded I believe, have that front slant, more attractive I think and a lot less expensive! Any info is much appreciated, Thanks.

I have put a 1700MK2 dust cover on a 1200MK2 with no issues, and although my SL1710MK2 is currently in a spot I cannot check, I did buy a 1200MK2 cover for it, and I recall it fit fine.

The earlier series non MK2 1300/1400/1500 and 1600/1700/1800 are a bit different.

Ps- I've also put the MK2 dust covers successfully on the original SL1200 non-MK2 as well.

Height difference? I'll guess-timate 1" to 1 1/2", measured from the corners, and not including the bubble.

Thanks for the info on this. I'm debating the purchase only because of the hinge issue.
I'm tired of polishing covers. No sooner do I get the scratches out then thru my own clumsiness I put a few more in~!

Yes the hinges from your 1600MKII will work in a 1200 dustcover as i purchased a new one for my 1800MKII last spring. I never thought I'd like the look of it at first but after repainting my table it just needed that add touch and the new cover looks really good.

Good deal!.... I was just made aware of another potential consideration if I go with the 1200 cover on the 1600 MK 2. Almost forgot about it but there's the infrared record-sizing pole (for lack of the correct part description) on the 1600 that is fairly tall. I wonder will the lower cover bottom out on the pole ?? I have so far been unable to get the height dimensions of the 1200 cover. Kevin at KAB may try.

no the cover will be fine height won't be a problem.
I have to leave in a bit but I'll measure mine and get back to you later today sometime. Plus on know Scottrt that rehabs the 1600MKII tables uses the 1200MKII covers with no problems.

Hey, thanks! Taking the guess work out of this really helps to make an informed decision. I was wondering what the height dimension was for that cover anyway.

Sorry if this is a hijack.

I called Kevin(KABUSA) several days ago and asked about the 1200 dustcover fitting my SL 1500...NOT a MKII...no decision was reached. I told him the measurements of the 1500 and it's hinges...he wasn't able to tell if it would fit.

So I will watch this thread waiting for the measurements(of the 1200MKII's cover) or someone that can tell me yea or nea. Thanks, Preston.

You could also do a Google search of AK under the "Search" option here. Hakaplan or Thedelihaus or Stanton may be able to help. The deal with the MK 2's is that the controls to the TT are all out in front of the plinth in a bar/strip so I would (only a guess) think that the covers to the MK 2's are shorter in depth front to back as the control bar is outside the cover. When I get oo work and home I'll be able to give the dimensions to the 1600 MK 2 cover at least.

Looking forward to the dimensions for the Technics SL-1600 MK2 dustcover.
There are some DIY groups locally that have made some very nice and inexpensive replacements. :music:

The 1600/1700/1800MK2 BODIES are about an inch and a half bigger, front to back, than the SL1200MK2, but same width.

The dust covers, however, are the SAME in width and depth- they will fit flush on the SL1200MK2 body, and flush on the sides and back of the SL1600/1700/1800MK2, with that inch and a half on the front exposed, as it should be, neatly and elegantly, with controls displayed for use with the lid closed.

I have a non MKII 1500 I'll check it for you and post later tonight or tomorrow morning as I'll have to get it out of the closet i have it stored in.

......SL 1600 MK 2 cover dimensions (O.D) 17 1/2" W, 3" H. Now the front-to-back dimension by measuring the distance at the BOTTOM of the cover where it sits on the plinth is 13 3/4" . The TOP of the cover distance is just about 13" front-to-back.

So, if the 1200 is the same (except the 3" part) then these dimensions should about tell you where you'll stand with a non MK 2 SL 1500. Hope this helps some anyway, Dan

Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated!!! :thmbsp:

It will help my Technics SL-1600MK2 restoration projects.

The only issue with putting the 1200MKII cover on a 1600MKII table is the hinge spring-rate difference.

The 1200MKII cover is less tall as mentioned, thus it weighs less. When fitted to the stock 1600MKII hinges, which it easily will, I can't get the cover to close all the way...it just doesn't weigh enough to overcome the stronger spring resistance of the 1600MKII hinges.

So I always purchase a new set of 1200MKII hinges w/brackets to go with the new 1200MKII dust cover. Two new holes per hinge bracket will need to be drilled in the back of the plinth. They are set narrower than the 1600MKII stock location, but at the same level. Use the new hinge bracket as a template.

Hope this helps..

I have an SL-1600 that needed a new dust cover. After doing the research, I found that a 1200 MKII cover will fit. I ordered mine from KAB with the hinges and it fit right on. I went from a non MKII unit using a cover from a MKII which is a bit different from you, but not by much. I cant say if your hinges will work or not, but I think the cover should. I took the liberty of measuring my 1200 MKII cover for you. It is 17 1/2 inch wide, by 13 11/16 deep, by 2 5/16 high. I measured at the bottom edges of the cover. Hope this helps you.
