Technics SL-235 vs SL-B2

Hello, I've been lurking here for a while now as I've been doing research to prepare to buy my first turntable!
I have the opportunity to purchase either the Technics SL-235 or the SL-B2 for about the same price ($50), and they both seem to be in working condition. Which one is the better deal?

Thanks,
Andrew

The SL-B2 is a semi-automatic, whereas the SL-235 is a fully automatic with changer capabilities. I say go for the SL-235.

I have an SL-235 - it's awfully plasticly and light. It may make a good first TT, but I wonder if you can do better. I've picked up Sl-1700 and Sl-1650 tables for under $50. So if you are patient you may be able to find a gem.

Does $50 include headshell/cartridge and a new stylus?

Where are you located?

Grab the one that is in better cosmetic shape.
They're both in the same league really, B2 is a newer version of SL-220.

I believe both turntables include the headshell and cartridge, but I do not know how old the cartridge/stylus is on either one.

I also just found a Dual 1219 for $30 which I am considering. The owner claims it is in working order, but says he hasn't used it in years. I am slightly wary of this TT despite the good things I have read about it because I have also heard Duals can be quite a pain to deal with if you have never dealt with them before. But if it ends up needing some TLC, I am up for the challenge and potential project it presents. Looks like this one definitely needs a new cartridge though.

Is it worth it, and would it be a better option than the 2 Technics models for the price?

Get the Technics SL-B2, easier to deal with the VTA on a non-changer turn table.

Cartridges do not wear out, just change the stylus/needle when you get the turn table. :music:

Thanks for the correction! I am obviously quite new to the turntable/vinyl world, so I appreciate any and all knowledge I can get!

I forgot to mention - the SL-B2 does need a new belt, but I am under the impression that I can get one for around $10 and they are quite easy to change, so I assume this is not a major issue.

Most used turn tables should get a new belt, new stylus, and a shot of oil to the motor as a general tune up.

Post the make and model of the cartridge on which ever turn table you decide to get, here.

Generally replacement stylus are available.

We should be able to find a good one to suit your need and budget. :music:

So I ended up going with the SL-B2. It looks like it is in great condition.

It has an ADC Integra XLM-1 integrated headshell/cartridge, and the seller claimed it was practically unused.

Now I just have to get a belt and figure out how to tune this baby up!

Congratulations on the Technics SL-B2 turn table and the ADC cartridge! :music:

The owner's manual should have some information on the set up and maybe even some ideas on the tune up.

Unfortunately while tuning up the turntable, I discovered that there was some significant damage to the left bearings on the tonearm. This renders the tonearm essentially useless unless there is anyway to repair the bearings.

I'm assuming that the only thing I can do at this point is replace the tonearm. How involved of a process would that be?
