Technics SL1900

Hi,

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to turntables. I recently bought an SL1900 for $30 (didn't come with cartridge). After a bit of research it seemed like a vintage Technics was a good way to go (not the 1200, I know, but direct drive nonetheless). The piece looks great although I took it to a turntable clinic and discovered the auto feature is a lil jammed up - the arm doesn't drop and lift properly. The technicians think they can fix it (dried lube needs to be cleaned) for $70 labour. They can sell me an Audiotechnica cartridge for an additional $30.

My question: is it worth it? I wanted a turntable because I miss mid tones in my music. I don't want to invest in a crappy generic new player but I'm also not looking to spend a tonne of $$. If the SL1900 gets fixed it will have cost me $130 in total. Worth it? Yay or nay?

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like you have a good tech with decent prices. When working 100%, the SL-1900 is a fine table - worth your investment.
