Technics sp10 mk2 p/l speed issues *


Hello! Its been a long long time since i wrote something here :)
So, i got a Technics sp10 mk2 p/l (bbc version). The turntable and the psu have been recaped some months ago, the psu adjusted on the correct voltages and also there are not ripples to them, the motor is oild and the turntable looks in very good condition generally. The problem is that after 1,5 - 2 hours the psu gets really hot and the speed of the turntable gets unstable. I send the turntable back to my technician to solder again some joints on the psu to be sure that everything is ok but still the problem remains. The turntable loose its speed lock after some hours. Does anyone had the same problem with his sp10? Best regards!

Driver board is the same, Logic board is different (in various ways depending on generation of p/l), Control board has modification to link into on/off control
 
Different topology but same ics? I got a logic board from a simple mk2 and a control board. Can i use them to make my pl work without the fader start unit?
 
You would need to re-work the start/stop and speed switch wiring since they go to the extra edge connector on the logic board. Once that's done you should be fine. I see you've found the thread on diyaudio. Look at post 1001 at the top of page 101 - that tells you how to re-arrange the switching.
 
It looks complicated so its better to leave it as is. I bought the extra cards most because the ICs to have some spare ones. I was thinking about to change also the trimmers on the psu. I hope to be a problem inside the psu and not in the turntable. The motor is silent and the thrust in good condition. What we didnt change is the transistors on the drive card .
 

One of the issues as you can see is that when i press the 75 rpm button (the turntable is stoped) the strob looks a little weak.
The other issue is that the speed looks like it waves back and forth .

You should do the transistors and diodes- these supplies after many years of use see a lot of wear. I’ve rebuilt 3 of these supplies and seen failures besides caps.

Thats the next step! Ill change also the trimmers inside the psu and clean all the connectors ! Thanks for your reply!
 
Before swapping parts I’d measure the load the ‘table is drawing when this happens, the voltages, and the ripple if you can. You may find the issue isn’t the power supply.

Hmm yes worth doing for peace of mind but most in the turntable itself are not dealing with what the caps are in the psu. It is way way more likely a cap is dead in the psu than in the turntable itself.

Wonky caps in the drive unit can cause problems, too. I agree that the problem is likely in the power supply, but changing the long-past-their-expiration-date caps in the drive unit is good for peace of mind. In the past, KentT has said that when the SP-10Mk.II tables were in regular radio station use, it was standard operating procedure to rebuild the power supplies every five years or less, because even if everything was working right, the caps were running on borrowed time, and the Mk.II is extremely sensitive to out-of-spec capacitors in the power supply.
