Can't afford top end gear. Would these go well with my realistic sta-2100? 50 bucks.

Depending on where you are located I think you can do better for $50. If you can scare up $100 you could do a lot better. Bigger is not always better.

They are package grade speakers to be sure and not high on the desirability scale. Provided all the drivers work and the boxes aren't beat to s**t, if you need/want largish speakers and are strapped for cash, they'd probably do for the time being.

You may have to "make it your mission" as in spend a lot of time to do better for fifty bucks. Doable, depending on if your not fussy about size and a smaller speaker is acceptable. That kind of money does not get much in used audio these days.

Depending on who you order from, that kind of coin now gets you what - maybe two family size pizzas?

Location can make a big difference in what's available and what you pay for stuff.
Where are you?
That way we have an excuse for going on your local craigslist or facebook and seeing what's in you neighborhood and pointing out our favorites.
What kind of music do you listen to?

Not my cup-o-tea but these ain't bad for rock speakers. The only Technics I ever came across with passive radiators. Much better than their ported models IMO. Decent excursion on the woofers they really get the radiators pumping the bass.

I picked up a pair of them when I got into vintage audio for 20 bucks. Thought they were good until I found some DCM Timeframe 600's. Gave the speakers to my girl friends daughter along with a AV receiver for a sound system. She uses her phone for a source and loves the setup along with her friends. Ear bud generation.
They are good for a give away system but if your serious they are easily surpassed.

You guys at AK are awesome. I appreciate all your replies and advice as I have no friends with any interest in vintage audio. That said, I use the Scranton PA, CL and the local Sallies for bargain finds. Occasionally find an estate sale to peruse.
I like classic rock, country, blues and try anything I find on LP. I've gotten my daughter into spinning vinyl but she only cares that her setup consistently works and she's happy. I however got the bug to continue listening to and improving my system('s) on a paupers budget.
Bought a Fisher BPC rack system $50 CL. Best part of that is the rack (kid loves it). Found her a HK 795i $85 EB, in nice working condition to pair with the cd changer (came with the fisher cabinet) and the TT she bought on her own. Pair of Technics SB-160 speakers $0 CL. She deserves better but they deliver the music to her ears.
My STA-2100 got at estate sale $(too many) but wasn't going home w/o it. Had to pull every dollar (including reserve) from my wallet, every dime from under my car seats, return of a couple small items already purchased at the sale and got them to seperate it from the rack, speakers and dual cassette package. Near mint and gets me in the monster receiver club here at AK (hehe). Figure someday this will deliver the ultimate listening experience to my ears. I have an old TT, an old sony cd player coupled to an old eq and a set of Pioneer 6ohm speakers, CS-G203, I bought new 30 years ago. I know I must upgrade, probably speakers first?
Also got (CL $0), pair of Technics SB-2680 needing surrounds on the 15" drivers. Pulled em apart and the woofers say Taiwan, mid's, made in Mexico and tweets, radio shack. Any of those original? I doubt it.
A realistic STA-2270 for $17 at garage sale. I will use it to practice pot cleaning and such. Doesn't sound bad when the stereo expander functions. Also have the Technics SA-300 that may have been damaged when my favorite set of speakers JVC SK-400II blew. Still looking for suitable drivers to replace the ones that shorted.
Whoa, that's way more info then you all were probably expecting. But that is my story and I'm sticking to it.

Any of those posted by markshan would blow the Technics speakers away. However, the KLHs will probably need some crossover work if it hasn't already been done.

Thanks Markshan. I saw the KLH on there, but the woofers look shabby. No?.
No, that's typically how they look. The surrounds may have been treated, which is a good thing, assuming the right treatment was used. Also, the grill cloth was almost definitely replaced. I'd call the owner ans ask some questions.

Seeing the treated woofers, refinished cabs and new grill cloth made me think they were gone over by someone who cared. I'm assuming they were recapped, but if not it's an easy job. Ditto for DeOxit on the tweeter level switch. My guess is that guy is one of us at least in spirit if not actually on the AK member list. Look how he added the pull tab for the grills. That's a guy who gives a crap.

The EV's are double my budget so I have to know that they are worth the verbal abuse I will get from the wife. Yes?
I"ve been texting this guy for over 2 weeks now, but have yet to get and invite to see any of them.

Maybe today he said. So....
The JBLs aren't bad for $50, nor are the model 17s, but based on his prices on other pieces I would expect the condition to be less than the 20s above. $250 for OLAs? $700 for Heresys? Top end of reasonable for sure. IMHO those are shop prices, not private collector prices. Plus I've had both and like the 20s better than the 17s, but ask ten people and each will probably get five votes.

If OP goes for those, he'll need some cables with RCAs on one end. For those who are unaware, the KLH 20s were originally part of the Model 20 system (see below), which included an all-in-one turntable+receiver. They're essentially 4Ω versions of the KLH 17s, without the latter's binding posts. His Realistic receiver (a real beast!) should have no problem driving them. Truly a classic speaker. I don't think I'd consider them "ultimate" speakers but in that price range you probably won't be able to do much better without a true "score".

Unless the guy added binding posts while he was doing everything else (but that's a good point I should have mentioned). If not, NOS Radio Shack RCA speaker cable can still be had on eBay.

Edit: Duh. He gave a picture of the back plate, didn't he? Five demerits for me. I guess I was thinking of when I recapped and added binding posts to a pair of 20s.
