Technics SU 8600 ST 8600 Find

I picked up this Technics SU 8600 and ST 8600 for 10.00 today at a yard sale. Both pieces power on, but there is no output from the speakers and I put my meter on the speaker outputs and there was a negative meter reading. Anyone have any information on these?
