Technics Turntable prices on eBay?

People can ask any stupid, outlandish price that they want to. It doesn't mean they will get it. That doesn't just apply to turntables.

Right, I was there this morning looking at EQ's and many seemed overpriced to me, and the you add that ridiculous shipping fee on top of it.

IMO, there's no bigger crap shoot than buying a used turntable from eBay. Too many things can go wrong from poor description of the condition of the turntable to damage in shipping due to bad packaging. Obviously there are exceptions, but I wouldn't take the chance unless the seller had stellar ratings and used original packaging for shipping.

Exactly.
I had one arrived totally trashed because they literally threw it in a big box with a couple of those little airbags that pop when you squeeze them. Another arrived in one piece, but they neglected to mention that someone's social security number (or something) was engraved on the front of the machine. The pictures didn't show it either.

I had two others arrive in one piece and as described, but I bought them so cheap that I didn't really care either way.

Love all the "flippers" listings and descriptions (or lack thereof!!)... undoubtedly very risky to buy a turntable on that auction site and even more risky to expect that it will arrive safely. Can't say I haven't done it though! LOL!

Not just turntables, the best idiot I had was someone who said cart had distorted channel, but otherwise perfect. Pics showed a Donon 304 with a new boron cantilever, I thought worth a bid and I won,( OMO I was bidding with the seller). Cart arrived with base missing and cantilever (aluminium) bent so not even the same cart!!!!!!! Suspension was totally collapsed and one channel was dead as suspension was stuffed AND tie wire was snapped so the stylus was loose and coil wire had snapped. I got my money back from ebay, as I have a microscope and could prove the seller was a thief. I am rebuilding the cart, just waiting for wire to rewind the coil so a free cart eventually, but ebay is full of idiots it seems.

So I've been looking at Technics Turntables on eBay and I have to say that I am really amused (a little confused) but I had a good laugh. So I'm just looking for a back up, nothing special. So do you think that people put high prices on their Technics Turntables because they are Technics?

Seriously?
Sorry, got a little sidetracked! Back to OP's question. Yes, we're seeing some outrageous pricing but I think we'd all agree it's not just Technics. But Technics do appear a bit higher than some other brands that are just as good. For example, a Technics SL-D3 can go as high as $300 in great condition where a Sanyo Plus series Q40 or Q50 might not (the later being the better table IMHO)...Just because of the name. The Technics SL-10 Linear tracker is fetching big bucks partly because of it's moving coil cartridge and partly because of the name while the Sony FL-7ii IMHO is a better table but goes for much less. And lastly, the SL-1200 series is rediculously priced when the Audio Technica PL-120 with mods and upgrades IMHO is easily just as good for half the price.

I see a Yamaha GT 2000 on there for 5,000 bucks, Just a normal GT which sell for around 2.000 with shipping anywhere else.

Does the seller think he has a chance at these prices? My favorite was the western Electric speakers for 200,000

It warms my heart when others say they won't buy a turntable through eBay, must be why I'm always getting such great deals on all my tables lol.

My last 7 tables were all purchased through eBay, and all were shipped except one. All arrived intact, if there had been any issues eBay's outstanding buyer protection policy would have covered me completely so absolutely no worries. Of course the buyer must do their due diligence in communication with the seller before to help avoid problems.

As for pricing of Technics tables, meh, so many better tables at better prices why bother. It's due to ignorance of the masses, it's like Bose, they've heard of them so they must be the best, bwaaa ha ha ha ha, ya right.

That said, not long ago a young friend was looking to improve on the USB table his mom gave him and asked for my help. Showing him some different tables he liked the SL1200MKII, picked up an absolutely pristine example shipped fully intact from eBay for $300. The max I would pay for this table, there are just too many better decks available at great prices with a bit of patience.

That is huge overpriced. Problem A: Belt drive Technics (which means that DC motor on these which is often unrepairable when the motor acts up beyond pot contact cleaning), Problem B: T4p mount only, with the limited number of such cartridges with available genuine styli. In my mind, in fully working order, this is worth $50-$70. No more. It's not junk when working well, but it's far from Technics best. I paid less than that for the Technics SL-1500 I use daily (which had to have a 33 1/3-Off-45 RPM switch, new electrolytic capacitors, and basic service, but was worth it and a lot better turntable). However, I got a Technics SL-BD 20 recently for $1. Even with a new stylus for the Audio-Technica which needs it, I did well. It will make someone a good starter turntable.

Locally a seller has a Technics SL-23 on sale for $100. Actually he has 2 of them. $100 each. I checked them out but they have issues. They both have the same issues. The tracking is whacked. I make some adjustments and not a minute or 2 later it's whacked again. This is both tables. I went home brought some Deoxit it and cleaned the pots real good. Both played nice for a longer period then WHACK they did it again. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone. They don't just go slow for a second or go fast for a second they do both. It's like someone inside those things is pushing the brakes and the gas just to drive you nuts. What's it gonna take to fix these things? I have no electronics experience except for using Deoxit and is $100 a fair price?

Well, can you use a soldering iron? If so, reflow the solder joints on the speed controls. If that doesn't work replace the capacitor that drives the motor voltage. Hope that helps...might want to start a different thread for this question though. Sorry, forgot to answer the question...if $100 for both, it's a good price if they're otherwise in good condition. Sounds like you already bought them though? Dustcovers are rare so if they're damaged, it will be expensive to replace them.
