Telefunken Hexagon Speakers?

70cst

70cst
Greetings ...

I have done a lot of internet searching and cannot find any info on this particular set of speakers. I have an Opus 7 (Tube Radio) and the sound is warm and laid back - part of it has to be tube related but the speakers are a great match for the radio.

I will mate these speakers to a Marantz 2230 receiver.

Thanks for any info.

They are most likely Panasonic from systems in the sixties.

One of my sisters had a pair of the oval shaped ones from the 70's shown in this photo.

Those look suspiciously similar, right down to the chrome plated legs and genuine walnut grain vinyl covering, to the Zenith Circle of Sound speakers from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Zeniths came in round and square:

But as far as I can tell, not hexagonal.

According to this article on omnidirectional speakers, early versions had a single upward firing 6" driver with a whizzer cone, like this:

Due to a lack of bass below 240Hz, later versions (like the square model pictured above) added a separate downward firing woofer to add more bass.

Do you know what kind of driver(s) are in the Telefunken speakers? It wound be interesting to see if they are also internally similar to the Zeniths.

I rather like the looks of these Duevel Sirius omnidirectional speakers:

At $35,000 a pair, I don't see a pair in my immediate future, but obviously, there are still folks out there making and enjoying omnidirectional speakers, similar in concept to those Zenith Circle of Sound speakers and your six-sided Telefunkens.

Please let us know how they sound when you get a chance.

I will be picking these up tomorrow morning - as said the seller says these are labeled Telefunken but no model number.

Once I bring these homes I will put up more picks.

Thanks Again

There were a slew of such speakers in the 70s when both omnidirectional speakers and quadrophonics seemed like the next big thing. Many of them are small and don't look like much, but they can sound good. I have a pair of Zeniths with 6 inch Utah drivers (not even the whizzer cone), and they don't sound bad at all ( and outside, they beat most speakers I have heard, unless you are exactly in the six inch sweet spot (in which case, what are you doing outside?)). Kind of gives you new respect for boundary reinforcement, good and bad, and the virtues of a coherent sound source.

Did you ever figure out what these are? I just picked up a pair and don't see any badge or markings at all.
