Testing unknown receivers...

I'm trying to decide if the Marantz receiver I recently bought off CL is safe to use with my speakers. I've done some research, and I found this thread [http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5634&highlight=offset] but I don't have a multimeter (I will buy one when I have some extra money). I've been running the Marantz with some test speakers (RCA HTIB speakers) for a couple days with no problems. Does that mean its safe to use some "real" speakers with it? Should I use the test speakers for longer before making a conclusion? Or should I just wait until I can get a multimeter?

It depends on which Marantz receiver it is...

Some Marantz receivers use a capacitor coupled output stage...So no worry about DC offset voltage.

And some are direct coupled and then it may be a concern.

Let us know what model it is.

I would wait at least until you know what type of output stage it is.

Then if it is direct coupled I would wait until you can do the proper testing before using it.

That being said you will find that there are people that just buy a receiver and then "Plug and Play".

IIRC it is direct coupled...It has been awhile since I have been inside one...

But I seem to remember setting both bias and DC offset.

You can download the service manual from HIFI ENGINE...No cost you just have to register.

I think you will find that it has the procedure for setting the DC offset voltage and bias.
