That Pair of Speakers You'll Keep Forever

Pics please..
They must be pretty

Go to the link in my signature and you can see the build process. But here's a pic of them. Still need to finish the bass bin grills once we get moved into our new house. I had to store them away at my best friends house last March as we sold our house and moved to a rent house.

New K-33-K woofers, new Crites A-55-G mids and CT-120 tweeters and new Type AA crossovers with all new parts...Audyn caps, Erse inductors, new autoformers, etc.

Original Type AA crossovers with NOW Russian MGBO PIO capacitors. Sounded ok but...

Built these to have "new" crossovers. The black oxide screws aren't there, now; those were only used to get them put together. They have stainless screws, now.

The Von Schweikert Research first-generation VR-4s that I bought used in 1999. They took me off the speaker upgrade treadmill for good.

When are you getting into your newly built home?
I hope you have a dedicated Listening Room for those, I would have designed a beautiful great room that those could fill the whole home with sound from

We are in the final stages right now. If it would only stop raining, we could get the driveway done and septic installed. We're at 95%+ done on the inside. I built a finished out bonus room upstairs that's about 15' x 35' and is carpeted for better noise dampening, reinforced joists, and 2 dedicated 20A outlet locations depending on where I set things up. It won't be a "perfect" room but it keeps it all out of the living room and it's away from everything else (above garage) so the noise won't be "too" noticeable. ha

Well I look forward to pictures when you're all set up

.
Are you going to put them 15 feet apart broadcasting down the 35 foot?

I have a 25 foot long room that is 14 feet wide with my ohms on that wall and I like the sound better then on the long wall..

At this point, I'm not going to say I'm gonna keep any of this forever (assuming I stay in audio, I got around another 50-60 years with them!) But for the next couple years at the very least, my Mission 770s and KEF Q150s won't be leaving (Unless I get better KEFs... :D)

Forever is a very long time.

One factor to consider in the 'forever' equation is whether you will have room for enormous speakers as you age and, as is typical, downsize.
I'm all set in that aspect as my main speakers, Van L Quartets, sound great, throw a soundstage like nothing I've heard, and are about the size of Dynaco A25.

I have a few that I will never sell but would have no problem giving them away. The reason is that the money they would bring would not outweigh the value of a gift would give.
The first one that comes to mind are some Polk Monitor 7's with Peerless tweeter. They are the ugly Rosewood vinyl but sound so good, they are worth maybe a hundred bucks. They get used on a secondary system now but if I ever have to downsize I could live with them as my only pair.

I know better than to say I'll keep a set of speakers forever. There's always a reason to move something along, and I need to constantly remind myself that at the end of the day, it's all just "stuff". And unless they're extremely rare, they can always be replaced.

For a number of years I said I would keep my Ohm F (that I painstakingly restored) forever. But then some Martin Logan's fell into my lap and I wanted a single music/movie system, and off they went.

I also had Infinity RS II for a time. They sounded great (almost as good as the Martin Logans), but their size and amplifier demands made them surprisingly easy to let go of. Wife hated the way they looked too, which helps them move along a little easier.

It's funny you mentioned that. I had a pair of the exact speakers (Monitor 7 with peerless in rosewood veneer). Loved the sound, but I wasn't using them and was moving at the time so I was in hyper-downsizing mode. I sold them for $150 with stands and immediately regretted it as I quickly realized there's no way I'd get better speakers for that kind of money anywhere. Oh well.

I had them. I even told them "You and me forever, I promise." Meridian M30/II. M-T-M 2 ways. The Mid/Bass were the same as used in the LS3/5A, but spec flat to 32Hz (a full octave-and-a-half deeper, no subs needed). They were active: two power amps and electronic crossover. Clean and transparent, highly accurate. With a good tube preamp, they sang. Also compact, spartan but beautiful, high-tech sex.

Then a friend begged me for them, actually got down on his knees (theatrical to be sure). I broke my vow and gave them to him. Do I wish I had them now? Totally! Do I regret the gift to a friend? Yes — but only because of what he did to them.

Oh lord, hope this doesn't end like the complete system I gave my sister many years back. Turntable completely destroyed, speakers literally ripped from the cabinets by my destructive nephew, almost nothing salvageable.

Although not as exotic as some mentioned, I love the sound of my JBL L-150's. I have several pair of speakers hooked up and inevitably switch to those. I have not bought nor looked for any speakers since I got them, and have sold a few pairs. It all comes down to what you like and what sounds good with your choice of music.

The speakers I'll never sell are my Legacy Focus and Klipsch Kg4s. The Focus are a "purists" version with no contour switches in cherry-stained Ribbon Mahogany. I've had my Kg4 since the early to mid-80s and have always enjoyed them. This is an online picture, but mine look identical.

Pretty much, James. But my friend didn't do it. He sold them (I'll admit that hurt me, it wasn't 'in the 'spirit', but he needed the money).

Sale was through Ebay, shipped from NYC to FL. The packing was indestructible: Godzilla couldn't damage them. Mr Florida was a psycho — Hannibal Lecter, but speakers were his prey. I won't go into detail of what he did. As they say on TV: "We warn you: the following details may be too graphic for many viewers."

"That Pair of Speakers You'll Keep Forever"

hmmmm must said that a couple of times to the following speakers

KEF 105.2 - lasted 10 years, now gone
Usher X-719 - 12 years with me, was going to be sold, but had a crack on the cone, repaired and now in storage
JBL L112 - less than a year, now gone

Currently using an Acarian Alon Model IV, I will keep this forever, Promise :)
