BMI and ASCAP are the enforcment arm of the Music industry here in the US. Sometimes smaller establishments will get by for a while without getting caught, but if you get caught the fines will be based on the day you opened your business. Same with TV's you pay fees per TV as all those Networks want their cut as well.
Some of the audio and Video systems used are quite good, I have installed thousands of them, from basic ones to quite good ones. Most of the time they keep the volumes pretty low, but at times when I was installing a new system prior to the store opening I would really crank it up. One particular grocery establishment has a really nice system, the Publix Greenwise stores in Boca Raton and Palm Beach in Florida, I did both those establishment. That one in Palm Beach is quite the store. almost 50 feet high with Mezzanine above the shopping floor which they have live artist play music on Friday nights. Four different zones of music as you enter one zone it might be new age music, then enter the wine area and Classical music comes in, ect... It was quite difficult to get the zones where they would fade in as you left one area and entered another so that they wouldn't interact between each other. Very specific placement of dirrectional sound tubes place just right, not to high as to make sure the dispersion axis were critical. Publix Greenwise is Publix's competion to Whole Foods, a all natual foods store.
And that one surf outlet store everyone of them has a large video screen which I would make up of 9 smaller flat screens, each one played 1/9 of the picture to make total of them make up the one picture, its a live streaming screen of the view outside of the Hunninton Beach surf shop on the Pier.
I would say most of the system I installed was JBL speakers, but there are others that are just as good as the JBL's, some not so good. I really like the EAW monitors for distributed audio system speakers.
