The big no-no, buying parts from ebay

Wanted an opinion from you all. I’m generally a no way, not worth buying parts from eBay as there are too many counterfeit parts, just buy from Mouser, Digikey, etc. I have most everything I need on hand anyways, except a few items. There seem to be a shortage of large screw terminal filter capacitors. I had to wait for months and months before I received the Nippon U36D 15,000uF 160V caps needed for a Phase Linear 700 I was working on.

Well I’m in the same boat again, I’m working on a Kenwood 700M for my father and I told him that unfortunately the caps are unavailable at the moment. I have them on order, but there is a shortage everywhere.

Last night he sent me an eBay link with the particular caps I’m looking to use and he said it was safe since the guy has 100% positive feedback. This guy or gal has over 30k feedback and I look at their other items they have listed, and they have dozens and dozens of all types of these larger caps used as mains filters.

I don’t understand how this could be legit, how could this person have dozens and dozens of all of these large capacitors when none of the major vendors can seem to get their hands on them? I mean several brands and values that all online vendors say a minimum of 26 week lead time or expected delivery late ‘22. The only explanations I can come up with is that they are buying fakes in high quantity or they cleaned out the online vendors and sat on their goods knowing a shortage was coming.

Thoughts?

Would you buy?

not impossible this person was involved in a special order / group buy type of thing and thats why there is a supply. When I got caps for my Phase Linear 700 several years ago, that was the way to get a cap that was an exact physical fit. Pretty sure they were NCC caps too.

Would these work? Might be able to make them fit.

This seller, in Wisconsin, seems to have bought up a box or more of these caps, maybe when EOL was announced and is supplying them to the rebuild world. There are a few sellers of parts on the bay that do source from known, accepted supply houses. Maybe the seller can provide info on the source.

I figured it wasn’t impossible which is why I’m asking, it just seems unlikely with how many brands and values, also how many of each value. Certainly could be legit though.

That one is too large at 76mmΦ. The one that fits is the LKG2A223MLZF which is expected at Mouser in December!

The originals are measuring 76mm with my calipers, so I believe they should fit. Yeah maybe I’ll reach out and ask about it. I’m sure it’s very likely they are authentic, but you never know with eBay.

Oops, I used some bad info on that sizing so I deleted the post. Glad you got info on the seller. Just someone that walked through Digi-key and picked the shelves of eol parts to keep us supplied as the parts disappear from the normal vendors.

Oh that’s a huge bummer to hear, is Nippon no longer going to be making this series of cap?

No that was conjecture on my part as so many caps are going eol. Need to evaluate each choice for that possibility. Nichicon doesn't make much electrolytic we use in the less than 1µF range but then we have switched to film caps for those. Just changes in what we need to source.

Oh yeah, true. I notified the same with Panasonic. So I get Wima for the small stuff now.

This is my go-to vendor when looking for parts, particularly capacitors by size requirements.
Yes they are reliable and I've gotten caps from them at very good prices.

Thanks for the link I saved it just in case. I prefer to buy from website that actually have a physical address and have a number where I can call.

I prefer to call in and order on the phone with an associate, it just gives me more of a fuzzy feeling I am ordering legit.

It's a good practice I recommend for others and is usually faster than filling out the info online and you have a chance to ask a question while you are on phone.
