The Dire Straits The Studio Albums 1978-1991 Import 180g 8LP Box Set

The issue with GZ is quality control, just like with the company that pressed the Beatle reissues. It is hit or miss. Pallas's QC is exemplary. Many of my copies frankly looked like hell when I got them out of the extremely tight fitting sleeves. All were covered in paper trash and many had fingerprints and scuff marks. After cleaning all eight LPs with a four step process they all sound fine. I prefer to buy from Soundstage, but with this pressing plant in play it could make sense to order from Amazon where if you have a problem they send you a second set before you send the first one back. That way you can go through both sets and try and make one full set.

So how does one tell if the pressing is from GZ or Pallas?
I ordered mine from Amazon the seller was in Germany so maybe I got lucky?

If they were pressed at Pallas will say so on the third line of the red sticker in the upper left hand corner of the box. The ones from GZ have gz.com in the deadwax.

My order has not shipped yet... :scratch2:

Maybe they were closed 26th & 27th

Going to email them today and check

Has anyone ordered this box set? I have been drooling over it. Seems like a nice prices as well, $164 at Elusive disc. I already have all the DS albums, including the new double LP Brothers in Arms pressing which this set also haves. The only missing Album is the On Every Street, which is a very rare LP to find. The rest of the Albums are older pressings, in decent shape.

I was hoping to get any feedback or recommendations on the quality of these pressings...

Cheers! and Merry Christmas

It is in the box set. His comment was that it was not available otherwise. IMO far from there best or close.

Far from their best or close? I would not agree with that assessment at all. On Every Street is an outstanding recording....far better than the over-produced, overly-polished mess that was Money For Nothing and Brothers In Arms....two recordings I NEVER liked. My local high end shop uses OES as recording of choice when they demo their systems.

Love Over Gold is also superb.

Got my set from elusive disc on New Year's eve. It is a GZ pressing as indicated on the dead wax. The earlier observations are spot on, the paper sleeves are tight and one has to remove the discs with care. There is some minor paper dust on the discs, which I cleaned with a record brush.

So far I have visually inspected and played Dire Straits, Making Movies, Love Over Gold and On Every Street. The recordings are clean and quiet, except of some ticks and pops on one disc. I am going to wash the the records this weekend and listen again. visually the records are clean without any scratches or scuffs.

Overall, happy with the purchase.

+1 for On Every Street, particularly tracks "Fade to Black" and "You and Your Friend".

BIA & Money for Nothing have impressive sonics but remind me of the Steely Dan "studio" sound.

Got my Box Set yesterday , Monday

GZ also and the observations are spot on also...

I listened to Dire Straits & Making Movies last night after a rinse/wash/rinse/vac. No problems and the SQ is excellent. Put them into new inner sleeves afterwards

Just hope the others have the same SQ

Has anyone determined if the Brothers In Arms in this box is just a repress of the 20th anniversary double vinyl? I've read conflicting reports.

Tying up loose ends... Finished the last album tonight from the Box Set

All were good LPs after a rinse/wash/rinse/vac before playing

Worth the $$$ to me

Not surprising as Knophler played guitar with Steely Dan on Time Out of Mind in Gaucho. Apparently his experience with them influenced how they produced Love Over Gold and BIA.

Are the records in the box set the same as the WB 180g pressings mastered by Bernie Grundman?

I've been on the fence on whether or not to pick this set up and I finally gave in and ordered it on 30 Jan. It came in today and is a set pressed at Pallas. I'll be giving them a cleaning tomorrow and start listening to them. I used to have BIA and LOG, but they, and quite a few others, got broken in a military move.

I'm looking forward to hearing them!
