The fob and recurring charges, I do too. It's the underlying infrastructure I'm talking about and the fob is made possible by that... and real time tracking and taxing, issuance of tickets and violations, use allotments... all in the works. Industry white papers discuss it with no reservations... the fob thing is just something that gets attention because the recurring costs bring it forward ahead of the rest. I get that some people have no reservations about having a cop or a bureaucrat or the air resources management department riding with them because that is to a large extend what is being installed in private cars, transponders included. Some aftermarket scan tools show some of this that can be service related... some is not available without special dealer or manufacturer only scan devices. At some point in the not too distant future it might become an issue for many.
 
Does Toyota pay to use a contracted wireless link to couple remote start from the fob to the car?
If so, then it might be like the free period with satellite radio service.
 
Some (maybe all) European cars are not equipped with remote start. It's an environment thing. They can technically perform the function but its not coded in the operating software.

At first I was disappointed in that but I can program the temp to have my seats and steering wheel heat come on and it only takes a min for my hands and tushy to warm up. I don't really miss remote start and I wouldn't pay a monthly fee to have it.
 
gm is discontinuing heated St. wheels.. I expect seats too... S'matter?? can't put your butt in a cold seat?? okay... get one of those pizza or food aluminum bubble wrap delivery bags put em on the seat.. I got a few I saved.. INSTANT BUTT toasty even left in the car. Hands?? gloves work well as I remember. (I do have seat warmers.. but the food bag is instant.)
also... these remote starters are a waste of fuel!!! Too lazy to get up and start your wifey's car?? you might get more jingle bells if you do. LOL then as she's on the phone looking at her phone or talking.. reminder her that somebody might just steal the car! And if you're a guy and you need it?? you're a softy..
 
My VW has a real ignition key. They wanted extra for remote door opening. Screw them.

Town I live in doesn't have an auto plant, but one of the biggest employers in the area is a roller bearing company, they supply various industries including auto plants (even non domestic).
