...makes them some high-horsed prick who wears pantaloons instead of pants?
John, you would probably cut a dashing figure in pantaloons. :D

I mean, that IS how I dress, but that's beside the point.

And Washington obviously bought only Naim and Linn. You can tell by the shine of his boots, even though he's standing in dirt. Somebody below his worth was keeping those things clean....

Washington took himself VERY seriously and as President was addressed as "Your Excellency". He was a great leader and along with Lincoln one of the two indispensable men of American history but he was not one of the guys.

"And when they play "Hail To The Chief" Oooh they point the cannon at you.".....John Fogerty.

Don't know how to comment on all of the value discussions going on, but I believe that how much you spend depends upon your level of comfort and your priorities. True story. While calling on an audio dealer around 1976, I met a man who drove this beautiful Ferrari. It was a dark blue Dino 246GT. At the store he was purchasing an expensive ( for the time ) set of B&W speakers. We had a long talk and since I was travelling around New England trying to sell high end audio at the time, he invited me to his place in Providence for a listening session. When I finally met him at his place, it was a run down one room apartment just above a dive of a bar. But, he had the Ferrari and the really good stereo. To me, he had his priorities straight.

I'm rock'n the rondo! with the 4 cylinder. really I love that car.

as far as what I am comparing it to, I have a 56' belair with a 383 stroker, run's low 13's high 12's in the 1/4 mile. I also used to sand drag a alcohol drinking yamaha banshee quad, stretched to the max, full drag motor build, that thing was brutally fast , I mean BRUTALLY fast. it would run 0-85 in about 3.8 seconds in 300ft, thats about the 300ft times of a 9 second 1/4 mile run. stupid fast.

Well, that makes sense. :thmbsp:

I doubt you'll find anywhere in history where "one of the guys" wore a cape. Washington deserved his, that's for sure.

I thought they had a little tussle on "Your Excellency" and went with Mr. President.:scratch2: I thought it was Adams that suggested the Excellency thing, and got some strange looks.

It's also not my intention to divide or unify, just to explore.

Perhaps a simpler way of asking the question I had in mind might be "why is it that someone who beleive that it's OK for a stereo system to cost two days' pay can also riddicule those who think it's OK for a stereo to cost 2 month's pay? Where is the line where disrespect kicks in? And why the heck does such a line even exsist?

There is a sticky by Grumpy that might be related to what you've experienced:

Do you think AK is about vintage or cheap? If you do then you have the wrong web site. Its about a community who appreciates all audio and music.

I think people develop a way of doing things that they then perceive as normal, and anything outside of that is abnormal or ridiculous.

My biases are that the fun of this hobby involves reading review magazines, visiting local dealers, talking to company support reps, and using these resources to detemine what is important or not important in the reproduction of sound in my home. I like the in-store auditions, borrowing floor samples to take home, and getting information and feedback from dealers, distributors, and manufacturers. I like supporting these people with my purchase dollars. I like getting something brand new, something no one else has used or possibly abused, something that, through audition, I know will have a positive impact on the enjoyment of my system, and something that has its full, useable lifespan ahead of it.

Audiokarma is the site that opened my eyes to a different way of enjoying the hobby. I still don't really understand or relate to how anyone gets any pleasure or satisfaction buying used gear, and especially not the habit some have of continually buying/collecting/trading old audio gear, having garages or basements filled with gear they can swap in and out at will, and yet I know that many here at AK do just that and have a fine time of it, too.

The different approaches people can take, and there are many, are so different that in a real sense it doesn't even seem to be the same hobby. I wonder if that's part of the difficulty we can sometimes have in understanding and respecting how other people enjoy hi-fi, and the reason Grumpy needed to remind us that AK is about appreciating all audio and music.

I don't see the laces on Washington's boots and I thought you were more of a knee high lace up boot kind of man. Did you ever get the Greek fisherman's cap?

Well, yeah, there are subtle, detail, differences between the common hipster-douche such as myself and 18th century man of position and honor. And my boots are brown. They were out of black. And I wear them in snow, not battle.

I like pickles. Dill, butter, sweet & sour are all tasty to me. Vlasic, Mt Olive, and especially the ones my neighbor makes. I don't really care for the things McDonalds calls pickles, so I may be a bit of a pickle snob, although when I was a kid I did like to throw them against a wall to see how well they stick. I don't do that very often these days.

Oh, and I have some stereo gear.

I think it was under Adams that Mr. President started being used. Though Adams was a stuck-up New England prig he was very egalitarian compared to a Virginia aristocrat, in form at least.

It's Adams' son John Quincy I find most reprehensible; sniffing his nose at the common folk while making his dastardly deal with Clay to screw ole Andy "by the Eternal" Jackson in 1824. When in his dotage Jackson said there were two things he regretted not having done; hanging John Calhoun and horsewhipping Henry Clay.

Eyugh. Pickles. Disgusting.

But I do agree with your right to love them, in fact, you're more than welcome to have my share of the pickles. *throws pickles everywhere*

..sorry...I don't know where I was going to go with that.
