The Summit --- 20 Years and Counting

I'm off to the Summit tomorrow morning for three days of nonsense, listening to music, drinking beer, eating seafood, playing Liar's Dice and Parsuhl and general bad craziness. We have a core group of 10 guys showing up (and all 10 were at the first Summit in 1986) making it this year. (No spouses, girlfriends, or children attend.)

We have a rundown beach house on Pawley's Island for this year's venue. Previous sites have included a site along Wilson Creek up near Mortimer, NC, the New River, and Kiawah.

I'll be bring my "C" stereo system, anchored by my Sansui 771 receiver. This event is an example of what the late Hunter S. Thompson meant by "Bad Craziness."

Pawley's Island ! Omigawd ! What a WONDERFUL place ! Is The Seaview Inn still there ? Walk up & down the beach, everyone speaks. Old, genteel hasn't changed in 50 years kind of place. The kind of place you go if you want to rest & take in the ocean. You wanna honky-tonk w/the rest of the tourists, go to Myrtle Beach. They even have a resident Ghost, the Grey Man. Last time I was there was in '77, I hope to go back someday.

I remember when it wasn't like that, esp. the North Myrtle Beach area. I spent many a spring break there when I was in high school.

The seafood at Murrell's Inlet is the best I've ever had.

Now it's hundreds of golf courses and bright lights. Bummer.

I have good memories of Seabrook Island, Sullivan's Island, Kiawa, and Hilton Head. Beautiful islands. :thmbsp:

Yeah-lotsa folks go to Myrtle & don't care if they ever see the ocean or not. It's all about Pasture Pool... Murrell's Inlet ! Oliver's Lodge ! Lee's Inlet kitchen...Oh, yeah...remember THEM places !! Oliver's lodge looked like it had been built on Day 8 after the Lord finished creation...Remember how it STUNK so bad at Pawley's sometimes from that paper mill down near Georgetown...LOVED to go crabbin' in the marsh behind Pawley's at high tide.. the more rancid the chicken-neck bait, the better the crabs liked it...Lachicotte's...Brookgreen Gardens...The Original Pawley's Island Rope Hammock shop...Going to All Saints' Waccamaw Church in the middle of the night & seeing if you could conjure up "Alice"...Can you boys tell I had many good times at Pawley's ?!?

I wonder what St. Simons and Jekyll Islands are like now. Twenty two years ago they were somewhat quiet golfing meccas. St. Simons had the Crab Trap restaurant. I had a great time.

My two years stationed in Jacksonville, FL. were some of the best years of my life.

Just back from 3 days and nights of mayham and lots of music, beer, seafood. Sandy, we make these treks twice a year, so I could always use luggage bearer/food taster/Man Friday/sidekick. It's a fair trek, not bad really, from this house (in the 4th row of houses) to the beach. There is a great crow's nest that affords a grand view of the marshes.

There were 10 of us in a house big enough for about 6, but no problems other than snoring from hell. The beach still looks great, and the development around it is fairly minimal compared with so many places.

I think St. Simons still has the Crab Trap restaurant. I used to head down that way more when I lived in the eastern part of Georgia in the late '70s.

Now back to life as we know it. . .
