The venerable Simpson 260 analog meter

Yup...

Accurate, real time, smooth, big.

What's not to like?

Set to the proper AC volts scale. 2.5vac works for most listening levels with good resolution.

VERY COOL. Why didn't I think of this before?

Good way to put it to work. Mine's been collecting dust on a shelf since I bought the Fluke.

My very first meter, still have it almost 40 years later, still use it as digital meters cant offer the resolution a swinging needle can.A gift from my HS electronics teacher, thanks Mr Schmidt.

Thanks @gadget73. That's an impressive frequency response for the 5 volt range. I have forgotten what my digital meters AC frequency capability are.

I remember the Simpson meters from my childhood days in the '60s. Seems like that was the brand to get. They were pricey for the hobbyist. So I got myself a Lafayette multimeter relatively cheap. The Lafayette had the V and V/2 switch to extend the number of ranges, but also halves the ohms/volt spec respectively.

The new digital meters of the '70s had Fluke brand being popular, at least in the research/scientific areas.

mind you I don't know if all of the series have that same response, I just happen to have a 7 series. Honestly I didn't realize it was that wide either. I also have a 5 series, but slightly prefer the 7. It has a 1v range which is easier to use for setting bias than the 2.5v range. Advantage to the 5 though, it uses common banana jacks instead of those goofy Simpson inverted jack leads used on the later models. I think some Triplett meters also used that but its very much not the industry standard which makes the test leads cost a lot more.

You can still buy a new Simpson and they are not cheap. Used ones can be had for peanuts because few people want analog meters. I own four of them and the test leads on each cost more than the meter did.
