The "What If?" Moments In Rock History

What if so many major rock stars hadn't died of drug overdoses? If Jimi Hendrix, Bonzo Bonham, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Blind Al Wilson, Tommy Bolin, Keith Moon, Mike Bloomfield, Brian Jones, etc. had lived, just think what could have happened to rock music.

or if Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, Richie Valens, Jim Reeves hadn't died in plane crashes.

Kinda lookin' for actual anecdotes, not speculation.

I do like the actual stories- its all very interesting!

Given the release of Brian Wilson's "Smile" I wonder what it would have sounded like and what the reaction to it would have been, had he finished and released it ahead of Sgt. Pepper in early 1967?

What if Roky Erickson would have joined David Gates in Bread, or even better Gates would have joined The 13th Floor Elevators?

Wait, this actually could have happened? I had no idea that Roky auditioned for or was in discussions to join Bread, nor that Gates auditioned for or was in discussions to join the Elevators.

I know about the discussions about Janis Joplin joining the Elevators, as Urchinn alluded to. But I didn't know about this Roky-Gates connection.

I read where Eddie Van Halen contacted Gene Simmons about the lead guitar gig in KISS after Ace Frehley quit. THAT would have been a cool band! However they wanted a reletive unknown so that when they put the makeup on him no one would know who he was.

I think it would have made the 80's KISS less shallow.

See, I guess I think KISS was always shallow, back to the beginning of their existence. Doesn't make them bad, just what they were. I like a decent amount of their 70s stuff. I think the only difference between 70s and 80s KISS is fewer memorable ideas.

thats a stretch, because izzy stradlin wrote most of the tunes from my understanding. while slash has a style, its not far fetched to think he could have been replaced.

what was the article i read the other day about the guy that got kicked out of both nirvana and soundgarden and then joined the military? not that its a major what if, just an interesting read.

Jason Everman. He made it to Special Forces I believe.

What if Kurt never met that hose beast Courtney? Also what if Duff Mckagan had stayed in Seattle? He would have been in one of those mega nineties bands for certain, remember he was in 10 minute warning, a huge influence.

I was a HUGE KISS fan in the 70's, and even though I thought they improved musically when Frehley and Criss left, something special was lost. When they finally took off the makeup they became just another good rock band, and now it's just become sad.

I agree that Eddie would have been "forced into the format" by Gene (media whore) Simmons, but if he would have been allowed he would have made KISS a better band than they were in the 80's. I'm not even a Van Halen fan by any stretch. I even think Eddie is overrated. But I think he would have made an interesting contribution to KISS had he been allowed, that's all I'm saying. ALex could have been a great drummer for them too.

Remember also that Gene Simmons discovered Van Halen.
