The Who at the Superbowl

hehehe u are a funny f*cker.:D
it was what it was and i enjoyed it. good tunes great liteshow.

You have replied to the wrong person. I said nothing, yeah or nay, regarding the Who. I was only replying to someone else's comment. Having said that, I could have done without Pete Townsend singing.

One of the reasons I never turned the TV on in the first place. The whole spectacle has gotten commercialized to the point that it's completely sickening. I don't blame 'em for playing at the superbowl (still an amazing invitation), but changing lyrics? Those guys have enough cash already to refuse.

Ridiculous.

The Who didn't change the lyrics,. some bogus mixmaster guy named Will.I.Am changed the lyrics
for his little music video thingee that was a CSI promotion (or a Will.I.Am promotional thing) ...

What? You did not think they actually meant that, do you? They were trying to make a buck. The fact that Daltry showed up on Highlander, the series was the first indication of making money. The most recent was playing the weekly murderer on CSI.

Moon and Entwistle apparently did. :scratch2:

Well Entwistle was 57 years of age. That is not exactly young, by standards, back in the day. Now Moon was only 32. That is too young to die. But that is what happens when you abuse drugs. :thumbsdn:

But what has that got to do with Daltry and Townsend?

Well, it wasn't Bart Starr playing out there either...

Hell Roger and Pete probably did a WHOLE lot better than the guys from the 1965 Packers or Browns would have out on the field....:lmao:

tough crowd, do you folks even listen to yourselves... i thought they put on a great show for a couple of aging stars.. i would want to see anyone here do anything at 65 like you did in your 20's and 30's

my word

And you don't see 60 year olds suiting up to play pro football.

Moon embodied the reckless, take no prisoners attitude of the Who. Now I understand that you get older and, therefore back off the extreme positions you took in your youth.

In that case, the music needs to change, too. If the Who was about the recklessness of youth, destructiveness (remember they used to smash their instruments?) and nihilism generally, what was that spectacle we witnessed last night? With all those corporate logos and the slick light show, and the tie in to CSI, it sure wasn't about sticking it to the man.

That's because they can't, or can't do it as well as Pete and Roger did their avocation last night.

It seems that a lot of folks here forget that after all is said and done, it's entertainment, that's all.
I enjoyed what I saw last night and that's all that matters as that's all it's supposed to do.

What do you expect? Everyone gets old. You can't expect them to sound like they did in 1970. The have left behind a legacy of some great, great albums and in their prime they put on a concert that was an amzing experience!

Well that would probably be an interesting path to take, from a musical standpoint. However, the fans all want to hear the classic Who songs. So they keep them happy and also keep raking in the money...

I would like to hear Daltrey or Townie tell the NFL to "piss off".

"Play the wot..? The bloody Super Bowl? Oh 'ell mate, yoor knockerd, piss off then!"

I work as a stagehand and I see a LOT of has-beens both young and old, trotting out the circus pony one last time to make a buck. Some are on the endless merry-go-round, unable to stop. Did they sell their souls? Do they enjoy it too much to stop? Greedy?

All of the above, and I'm not speaking for the Who, just observations. My opinion is that the performance was lacking in the capacity of lead singer and lead guitar. Te singer started to bring it together near the end, so it could have been nerves, could have been equipment (monitors), or maybe he needed to warm up for a very short set.

Nothing to get cranky about. I think it touches on so many buttons that we all want to say something.

I thought that it was OK but I'll bet that they'd agree that it could have been better. I saw them two or three years ago and they were absolutely superb that night. Give 'em another chance - go see them if they come to your town. They still have a few tricks up their sleeves!

They had a rough start but were definitely better by the end of the show. My impression of the whole thing was not great, but OK.

I was talking with my friends at work about the show and my buddy went home at lunchtime and grabbed their Live in Boston DVD (2004) for me. I was very impressed with that show. It totally blew away the Superbowl performance. I know they two totally different circumstances but it was still a great show for a couple of guys in their late fifties (at that time).

Maybe Sunday was just a bad night???

IMO, that is what is wrong with geezer rock bands like The Who. As far as keeping the fans happy, my sense of public opinion from this and other boards is about 2 tp 1 against The Who. These guys have a legacy to think about.

Exactly.

I had the sound off and was listening to music. From what I have heard they sucked. I asked a few that did watch, they all said the same thing.
