Thinking of making an offer on an older Pioneer system.

A friend of my wife and myself lost her husband to cancer a few months back. Back in the early 80's he bought what I am told is a top of the line Pioneer system. She doesn't listen to it at all so it just sits in a corner gathering dust. Her selling it is not out of the question so I got some model #'s off of it and told her I'd do some research on them and see what I think I could do on everything. I don't know if she has a price in mind or not. I'm very interested in this equipment so I don't want to try and lowball her because she is a friend and could probably use the money. On the other hand it's not something I really need so if I do a deal on it, it has to be worth my while too. I'm unsure as to whether I'm allowed to post in more detail here as I just joined up and my only other post is in intro's so far. I don't want to break any rules here but if my expanding on this post is ok then I will get into more detail when I know it's good to do so.

Post the model numbers. Lots of well informed people here will tell you the ballpark value. However... I might be tempted to side with the widow just a little bit.

OK. Here's the info I have. Some of the #'s were hard to read because the corner it's in is dark and I didn't have my glasses.

The amp is a Pioneer (as is all the stuff I'll list here) A-9. From what I've found on the net it's circa 1981 and sold for around $800 new. Used prices I've seen go from 60-150 bucks on places like E-bay.

Next in the stack is a CT-7A tape deck. All I could find on the net about it was it was made in 1975. No pricing new or used that I could find.

The turntable is a front load PL-88F. (Or maybe PL-88P) I couldn't find much on it other than a couple Youtube vids. I have no real idea of it's value.

Tape deck #2 is a CT-9A (or probably a CT-9R because it was hard to read). My researching says 1981-1982 and sold for around $680 new. I couldn't find any used prices and to be honest I don't have a whole lot of use for cassettes anyways.

Next in the rack is a Digital Detector AM/FM unit, Model F-9. New price, $425, used $150-$400 is what I could find.

At the bottom of the rack is an SQ-9 or SG-9 equalizer. I found a couple online. One was $60 and the other was $100.

Lastly is the speakers. They are CS-703 and from what I've found, new were about $325 a pair and any used ones I could find were anywhere from 20 bucks a pair and up to $150.

Eddantes, believe me. I don't want to steal this stuff from our friend for a song. We've been friends for a dozen years now and I know some cash going her way wouldn't hurt. However, I'm not a rich man myself being this is the worst year I've ever had in my 25 years in the tile installation biz. I have just come off a nice sized job and do have a little bit extra that I could spend on something I don't really need but like. Heck, I haven't even heard this thing turned on yet.:D I would just like to offer her a realistic price that would work for both of us.

Thanks in advance for any info I can get on this stuff.

Ok... so we have a very nice Pioneer system here! Something like this?

It's not the kind of thing that I'm interested in, but it was TOTL. For me the value would be in that they come as a package. The tuner is well regarded; the amp is 110w, the EQ is collectible by all kinds of Pioneer collectors... The problem is most people are interested in the previous generation of Pioneer equipment, so even though this is nice gear, there is much smaller market for it then for the 70's stuff.

I hope someone with knowledge of this gear will chime in soon. I'll refrain from making a guess as this stuff is completely off my radar.

Thanks eddantes, other than a couple of differences that's pretty much the setup I'm looking at. Dumb question here, I keep seeing the desciption TOTL when talking about this system. What does that stand for. It is rather different looking from other systems I've seen but that's sort of what got my curiousity up. To me different is not a bad thing and I've always prefered old stuff over new when it comes to almost anything. Example, the current car I'm redoing is 46 years old and the one before is 56.

There are no dumb questions. TOTL= Top of the Line. :thmbsp:

Now that's funny.:D I typed it myself in the second line of my original post.

Back in the early 80's he bought what I am told is a top of the line Pioneer system.

Thanks rushfan.:thmbsp:

The tuner is the most valuable item. It would sell easily for $100.

IF you are really interested in these items, as you say, I would offer $200 for it all.

The cassette decks likely don't work anymore. Although they are nice models with fine performance, they are a b*tch to work on.

The amp is a good performer too.

But very few people are after that particualr line of stuff in the resale market.

The Tuner would sell, the EQ might, the amp might, the rest probably won't.

I agree. The Pioneer equipment most sought after are the ones from the 70's. The equipment from the early 80's is not that popular.

That's nice solid stuff, my dad bought a CT-7R tape deck back in the day, very heavy and seemed well built. I always liked the champagne finish on that stuff.

I had a figure in my head before I started this thread. It was far from $1000 but more than $200. I was thinking between 3-5 hundred. I'm not going to give her an offer right away because I need her to take some time and think about if she really wants to sell it. If she does want to sell I will offer her as much as I can and still feel comfortable with. Like I said earlier, I'm not trying to steal it from her but I ain't rich either. ;)
