Thorens TD 147

Hey everybody,
Merry Xmas. I'm in the process of reacquainting myself with vinyl. It's been 30+ years so I don't remember much:( if anything. I used to have a Thorens TD 160 that's about all I remember. Those were foggy :smoke: days.
I'm in the (slow) process of making a deal for a TD 147 so the question is what is a good all- around cartridge
for the 147 that doesn't break the bank?
Thanks for the help:)

Congrats on getting back into vinyl! On the far low end, the AT3600 or ATVM-95E can sound great in Thorens sprungies, as can Grado Prestige cartridges, and I'm currently listening to (and loving) a Nagaoka MP-200 on my TD-160. You'll get best suggestions if you provide a price range for consideration, FWIW.

Does the TD-147 have the original tonearm? If it does, that arm has an effective mass of 7.5 grams. Which is rather on the light side for a tonearm.

I've basically run three cartridges on my 147 in the years that I've had it. I think the Ortofon OM series of carts sound good. I came to like the Grado Prestige carts better and used a Gold 1 for quite awhile. My favorite by far on that turntable (but they are pricey) is the Denon DL-301 MkII low output moving coil cartridge.

Good luck to you on getting a 147. I love mine.

plattensp: If it comes with the TP16III, but without the original set of plastic spacers for lower cartridges, you could consider the Audio Technica AT450, which Ebay vendor "wolfsbigbadgarage" still offers for an attractive price of not quite US$ 66. That's basically a renamed AT316EP - a T4P/P-mount cartridge, which in terms of technical quality level would be pretty much on level with an Ortofon OMP20. And in combination with the half-inch mount adaptor, that comes with it, it's got a combined height of pretty exactly 20 mm, which would be pretty ideal.

Greetings from Munich!

Well I'm glad to see other folks with one of these, or wanting one of these turn tables.
I've got one that I just resurrected, right before Christmas. Not to hijack the thread, is it better
to have many threads or one?
I'll just start another and go from there, I'll reference this one.
Here is the link to my thread. LINK

Thank you. I have not seen the table yet and my friend can't remember the details because it has been in storage for a few years. It could have a good cartridge on it. I'll update in the new year.

the Shure V15 vxMR with a jico SAS stylus is my favorite on my TD 147 but im sure any V15 cart should work well on that arm. i also use an Ortofon OM cart on it and have a few different stylus with the 30 being my favorite.
