Thorens TP-60 Headshell weirdness

Hey Folks,

One of my 165s had a channel out. Put the headshell from another 165 I had on, problem solved. The problem headshell has been rewired with three different sets of leads and two different carts. Still dead left channel. Sometimes when I tap on the pinth I'll get intermitent sound from the left. Sometimes the channels reverse! Sometimes the left has hum. Sometimes low volume. Sometimes dead completely.

Tearing my hair out. Any ideas? -DH

Sounds like something in the connector that attaches the headshell to the arm. Try some deoxit? Try out an ohm meter and some small probes, although if you find an intermittent contact, what can you do about it? I notice that replacement headshells are available online, if all else fails.

Thanks, CC! I'll hit it with a probe tonight. If I had the 50 bucks, I'd get a new headshell and let this one go at this point.

yeah, not much in there, so an ohm meter ought to tell the tale. I don't know if the pins through that headshell connector are single piece or not, but I can see one coming apart when the leads were changed if someone yanked on it with pliers or something. Its not exactly the most robustly constructed headshell and that plastic in the connector isn't real solid either. One of mine has about half the plastic crumbled away to nothing. Been thinking about pumping some hot glue in there to stabilize it while still giving me the option to get it out of there if I had to.

If one of those pins happens to look "longer" than one of the others, maybe you can get lucky and carefully tap it back together so it makes contact internally again.

I'm wondering you've got a strand of copper from one of the wires making an intermittent bridge. Take a real good look at the solder joints inside the headshell.

Is this an original or aftermarket?
