Was looking for something a little different, and came across the JBL 4312m, which was apparently only sold in Japan. They are running about $650 a pair, shipped. Any thought or opinions ? I'm guessing that I would also probably need a sub, since the woofer driver is only 6.5 inches. Ideas on that as well, would be appreciated.

I think they would look really cute next to a pair of full size 4312 monitors
The look like a novelty item to me...there is no reason to make them a 3-way.
For that $, I would consider a new pair of the JBL 308P powered monitors (Amazon). Or a used pair of JBL L60T or L1 (or similar or possibly better) speakers for less $. Maybe you can find a killer deal on the discontinued Studio series.
There are hundreds of other options if you consider non-JBL speakers.

When I first came across them, I found them intriguing for the same reasons you point out. What was more interesting was that they were only a "Japan Product". Back in the late seventies, when I was selling for Franklin Music in Atlanta, I sold several pairs of "Centurys" back then, which is why I am somewhat focused on JBL. I would have to agree. They had already used the "B", so they could not use "Baby". Funny that is was only available in Japan. Never saw them offered here in the US.

Many people in Japan live in what we would consider very small spaces. This would be an attempt to sell to persons who were basically sold on the 4312, except thought it was too big for them. Whether it sounded like a small 4312 or not. Sort of like if Chevy dealers had sold Opel GTs.

If you'd consider a pair of powered monitors without grilles, the JBL 3-series are absolutely fantastic. I have two pair of the original 305P and now even the newer 305P MkII are not much more than $200/pair online new. 80-watts of power amp in each cabinet. You really won't believe they're capable of what they put out.
