Thrift Jazz Score / Old LP's & A Franklin Mint Jazz Collection

Wow! I never look at the box sets. But that's all changed. About a month after this score I found 11 boxes (red vinyl) SEALED of Franklin Mint's "The Greatest Recordings of the Big Band Era" at another GW!!! I'm not a huge Big Band fan but they were only priced at 4 bucks a box. I took them to the register and she told me they were Half Off!! WTF!! I never heard of either series in my life and I score both!!

Hmmm, maybe it's time I took a little road trip and hit the thrifts in AZ. :scratch2::D Not to throw this too off topic, but I have a friend here in LA who has driven to AZ just to have lunch at Ted's Hot Dogs! I am not kidding. Then he drives back to LA. He's done it on more than one occasion!

That guy must be a sick pup . I drive by Ted's all the time (I just googled them) and never heard anything about them after living here for 10 years. But it looks interesting. I'll have to try it. Glad you brought this up.

I'm a former Chicagoan and that's where the dog's are.

and those to die for Italian beef sandwiches :sigh:

Let's not forget the Pizza and the Cheese Borger, Cheese Borger!!!

DAMN. I would fall over if I ever found that at a thrift store. So much good stuff there. On Red vinyl and the lp sleeves.

Damn is all I can say!

Well, congrats too!

Now you need to play them on a $5000 turntable, $2000 cartridge, thru a $$$$ tube amp. Ahh- maybe not.

Well, old records really do sound good on that type of equipment.

When I listen on my buddy's big system, we frequently do play those kinds of records.

I can attest to the very good recording/engineering quality of the Franklin Mint collection. A friend just scored a couple of the boxes sets. Same condition as yours. Opened but obviously NEVER played.

Nice! It's so rare to find any jazz at all in the thrifts, let alone something decent and in good shape. One of my best scores was about 15 albums from the "American Recording Society" -- the albums that were mail-order in the mid-1950s. They were the product of Norman Granz, one of the major early jazz producers. The records came in heavy plastic sleeves, no cardboard. They each had a 4-page brochure explaining the records. The ones I got are killer. Mono (of course), and really good music -- Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Billie Holiday, etc. The sound quality is excellent, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. Seeing his name is what prompted me to buy them.

Recently I found a great old album, "Meet the Jazztet," with Art Farmer and Benny Golson, on the original Argo label. Sadly, it looked like it had been dragged across gravel. I have a special stylus I use for this stuff, so I don't wreck my main one. There is so much surface noise it sounds like there's sand in the grooves, but interestingly, the grooves themselves are undamaged, and there's no distortion. Great music though.

I agree. I'm sure back in the mid 00's I might have seen some jazz and passed at the time as back then I wasn't keen to jazz like I am now. But yeah, lately (being the past 2 years of thrifting for records) I really can't recall seeing any jazz.

I am fortunate to leave near some antique stores that do have a couple vendors that sell LP's and do have some jazz, but of course at a price.

The coolest box set I ever found at a thrift store was a Readers Digest "Our songs of the 30's" set that has about 12 LP's and has some old Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and the like.

That's about all though.

I have a bunch of those Franklin Mint sets...part of the 2lp/box jazz set, and records 1-26 of both the 100 Greatest Classical Pieces of All Time and Greatest Showtunes.

All mint.

Great pickup!!!!!

It seems that everyone is scoring Jazz lately. I found some great 50s stuff at an estate sale today.

I think my mentality at the time was the dichotomy of vinyl systems. I don't doubt that those records will sound better on such a system. It's just ironic how much money you can spend , to play 50 cent records. I've spent $100 on sleeves, $100 on a case to hold them, around $300 on carts and needles, $100 on a spin-clean, etc. In my case , the average condition of the records I get doesn't merit that expense, but I'll still be buying more stuff, I'm sure.
