Time for a new driveway...

Clmrt

Just thrilled.
1170 square feet.

Quote # 1, performed while I was at work:
9" removed, 6" class 5, 3" finished asphalt with 7% cement content.

$2990

Quote # 2, in my presence:
9" removed, 6.5" Dolomite base, 2.5" finished asphalt, 7% cement.

$6000

Quote # 3, Was supposed to show up Monday, concrete guy. Said he'd ballpark the $3000 figure.

Anyone here had their driveway ripped out and installed?

I have seen your driveway. If you can get a tear-out, base prep and concrete for $3000 I would jump on it. That is of course if the guy knows what he is doing.

Damn, they must be getting hungry out there.

They're pro's, I've seen an installation done by the company.

He's a friend of my Grandfathers. Business between friends can be bad sometimes...

FWIW. To figure out how much asphalt you need for a job;
square yards x 115 divided by 2000 x no. of inches of thickness = tons needed.
When its being installed make sure the depth of the asphalt BEFORE rolling is 20% greater than what you've paid for compacted (finished). I've been out of the business for a couple of years but asphalt was going for about $35 a ton then.
Concrete of course is much better but about 5x the price. Flatwork (driveways and sidewalks) sometimes cracks. The earth moves, its a fact of life.

I just got a free roof out of that hailstorm that came through last fall. Maybe you should have them check your driveway for hail damage...

22.45 tons

$784 @ $35

Figure 20% increase per year over a couple of years and you're at $1131.48.

Plus the dumpster, bobcat, roller, labor...pffft

$3000 well spent.

That sounds about right.
One more thing; you should be there when it gets done. Work always gets done properly with the homeowner breathing down your neck. :D

Just an observation: my neighbor years ago had a new sidewalk laid in hillbilly style, just put forms over the old one and poured it.

BUT he used fibercrete, polyester fibers are added to the mix. Polyester.. the stuff they make 2 liter bottles out of... tough stuff...

The guy finishing it grumbled: @#%#@!! HAIRY concrete......

BUT the stuff has lasted for YEARS without cracking.... even at the control joints in a yard that FLOODS.... bou coo settling....

I AM impressed...

If I wasn't worried they were going to run a tollway bypass over my house in 5 to 10 years, by now I would have invested in a fiber-concrete driveway.

Just got a quote yesterday for similar job.

Our driveway is normal asphalt driveway for a house in the suburbs. The driveway is about 2 1/2 car lengths long and little wider than standard driveway with 2 car garage. Also a short area of the drive near the street that is the parkway will be done.

The quote says this:

- remove old pavement (asphalt)

- use existing gravel, grade, roll & pave

- roll and compact sub-grade using vibratory roller

- Rollers for Subbase, Gravel and Asphalt will be D24 and D32 Ingersoll-Rand Rollers, Dynamic at 4000 VPM Total 10,012 and 11,022

- With Paving Machine apply 3" l-11 Surface Asphalt

Price: $3,540

Local vendor, has worked in this area many years and I watched him do a neighbors driveway and was impressed with the work.

Good luck with your project. Snade

Yeah - the $6000 guy poo-pood the "recycler" guys and anyone using anything other than "Dolomite" base.

He said class 5 allows heaves to form when dolo won't.

I'm going to google "dolomite driveway" and see what floats.

We're going to have to do ours in the next couple of years... not looking forward to it.

I was told by my father-in-law to strike when the state is working on the Interstate.

Find out what concrete company the state is using and contact them to see if they have
any that needs to be used up before it spoils.

He did that when he had the two stall garage built in his backyard.

Stuff is of a higher grade mix than residential and since it was about to go to waste, he
got an excellent deal on the stuff.

It's been four years and not even a hairline crack has formed yet.

Yeah, class 5 heaves have a bastard of a time getting past Dolemite....
