Welcome to the thread specifically and the community at large.

Anyone who bought The Bluegrass Album for their first LP is more than welcome to the thread. I, too am a big fan of Tony Rice, I have a good collection of him on Vinyl and CD. I just wish Unit Of Measure were available on vinyl.

Are you familiar with Backwaters? One of my favorite LPs.

Welcome, sir! Pull up a chair and set awhile.

I had no idea that Jorma played Bluegrass.

I think I called it 'Blues Grass', as that's really the angle he comes from (acoustic blues), but on a few cuts, and with the players he has on the recording, it's definitely into the bluegrass wing of things.

On CD:

Ronnie Bowman, Starting Over

I heard it on the local Bluegrass station and had to buy it. The title cut has Ronnie Bowman, Barry Bales, Dan Tyminski and Jerry Douglas on it. I knew I liked the Dobro work there.

The Duhks - The Duhks
Sugar Hill SUG-CD-3997 (2005)

Canadian ensemble out of Winnipeg, Manitoba - this release covers a very wide range of material. Overall, there's a strong bluegrass inflection throughout. If I had to put a percentage on it, I'd say 30% bluegrass and 40% Celtic that includes Scottish, Irish and Breton sources, in other words much the same oral traditions that gave rise to bluegrass on American soil. Other influences such as gospel, spirituals and a bit of country blues along with more straight ahead folk just add to the blend.

Béla Fleck was one of the producers for this release. Guest musicians included Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Victor Wooten. This is a wonderful recording by a very talented group of musicians that were not only keeping the flame alive, but adding new fuel to the fire.

A caveat, one of the songs - Four Blue Walls - is a much more graphic and visceral work lyrically than one normally sees in this tradition. It's a harrowing tale of an incest victim exacting retribution on the perpetrator and the repercussions after doing so. It's a remarkable and chilling piece of work that may not be for everybody.

I just heard of this in the last week. Is it more like Thile or Meyer?

And PM, I just saw the Dillards on Andy Griffin Tuesday.

I just heard of this in the last week. Is it more like Thile or Meyer?

I haven't heard enough other material by either of them to judge that appropriately. Everything on the CD was written by the two of them together, and they share the spotlight equally throughout. Their collaboration on this release is the real star here IMO.
