Those are quite decent looking for sure. A lot better looking than some of the other crap I see people on here bring home for a lot more money than what you spent. Will be curious what they look like inside and what you think of their sound.

I will investigate the guts shortly. Backs do not come off - the binding posts are part of a large plastic cover, held in place by six screws. I'm guessing that means we have a modular crossover here rather than a separate board.

Listening so far , these can take power. I'm over half way round the volume control on my test amp - an older Kenwood amp with 80 wpc.

For 5 bucks I'd say you stole them. I'd also bet there's a pretty good chance that the woofers have cast frames.

Check out the Vintage Knob, Sony actually made quite a few high end speakers; it's just that they made so many more crappy ones.

Yeah Sony speakers have fascinated me for a while because I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of decent models flying way under the radar. If you look back at my $5 Akai post that's another example - I would not usually give Akai speakers a second look but the substantial two way bookshelves I found sound excellent with Vifa drivers.

I bought a system from sony equipped with a similar model, the SS S51, I think they are something bigger than the SS S31, the bass is 30 ",
I am very pleased with its performance, consistent bass, midrange and high frequencies balanced. box with good finishes.
By my choice are working with the 1984 Pioneer system, the amplifier is a competent SA-940
