So I had an old pioneer RtR RT-1011 and recapped the thing and messed around with it for a while but never got into it. I always wanted a deck that could play 15 ips. So as in my other thread I found a beat up Otari MX-5050 and got it working pretty well. Sounds great with the pre recorded stuff I have found. But always wondered about playing master tapes or at least those as close to the master as possible.

So I found some online and today I got them in. But the seller made a mistake and only one of the titles I got was correct and they sent me 5 other titles as well I d not want. Waiting for seller to get back to me on what I should do.

Well one of the ones I got that I originally ordered was Led Zeppelin's Presence .

At first I was't sure how to play the tapes. The shinny side was facing in and if looking at the front of the tape the tape was coming out the right side. So at first I flipped it and tried it that was and it was all wrong. Then I remembered that I read somewhere to store tapes tail side out. So I realized I needed to put the tape on the take up reel and rewind it to another reel then play it.

So I did and it came to life, WOW sounds great !!!!!

Here are pics of the box's it came in , two tapes one for each side of the record, another reason I think these may be direct copies.

The other tapes they sent were all Motorhead copies. I'll add those pics just for fun, but most likely will have to return them.
They all have that slight musty smell as well, but seem very well preserved.

You can see these look pretty authentic time period wise. And the sound is really really good just from playing on my work bench Yamaha A-960 and KLH CB-10 shop speakers.

The Tape was AMPEX 406, I happen to have a AMPEX 456 take up reel.

Captured with iPhone so sound is nothing like what I hear.

And here are the pics of the 5 motor head tapes. I think these are two sided tapes. I will not play them as I may have to return them, someone else got my Black Sabbath Paranoid tape I bet!!!

Wow- I would keep them all.

Then again I suppose I can record tapes like that from my streaming service.
It’s such a different world than it once was.
Used to be you never knew when you might be able to have access to certain albums again-so record them now.
Today it’s mostly all available all the time.

The seller said they bought the estate of a former Studio recording engineer. So they have hundreds of master copies that this individual collected over time.
I read somewhere that Olympic Studios when they rem modeled just put a lot of the tapes outside to throw away. Lots were taken I guess by people in the neighborhood and I would assume some of the engineers who possibly worked there.

I asked the seller what the engineers name was and they could not remember, it was either Jim or John they said. I might try to get more info from them.

I showed the Led Zeppelin pics to a local engineer who has some 1st and 2nd get copies of masters and said that these look like they are authentic.
