Toshiba SR-255 info and place in pecking order?

Manual in hand (thanks, bobaloniny!) I took a stab at correcting the cartridge set up last night using the Stevenson method. Not sure I entirely got it because (1) I had to convert the 46mm stylus to end-of-headshell distance to inches in order to use the only ruler I had to hand and (2) I didn't quite understand the Stevenson protractor. It has two grids on it and I don't see how I can possibly get the cart to line up to both without rotating the platter. Are you supposed to rotate the platter? I'm only familiar with using a Thorens arc protractor in which you keep the platter still. Any info would be helpful.

Anyway, just getting it close to 46mm and lining it up the outer grid did help a lot. Man, but this is a sweet little table. I love the no-frills utilitarian looks of the thing, too.

Update: got this guy set up over the weekend and it sounds really nice. The looks go with the rest of my gear, too! I'll post pics of it this week.

As you can see, the buttons, VTF dial, and cueing lever are silver as opposed to black, like the one I posted at the start of the thread. No idea why, but I like the all-silver look better, myself.

Thats a clean one, my dustcover looks like it was used to fend off a belt sander attack. Glad you have it all going on, enjoy.

Thanks, guys! I actually do need to get around to polishing the lid and getting some new feet. Also, I just won an original Toshiba headshell on eBay for five pounds. Can't wait to get it installed!

Got it up on Vibrapods. Seems OK.

Now, curious as to what sort of cart I should have on this beast? I've been using at AT440MLa and an AT92E. Is the arm too heavy for these? I can't seem to find a spec on the mass of the tonearm, even in the owner's manual.

has been a while, but hows the tt getting on? i just picked one up my self....unfortunately the platter has a bit of oxidization underneath, hinges are rusty, lid has turned a touch yellow....have just given it a wipe down and iam letting it air out at the moment as it stinks.....just deciding weather to resell or have a play with it...

I suppose the touch of yellow lid would be perhaps nicotine? Ammonia may bring er back.

Congrats, and thanks for asking!

I have to say, I love mine. To the degree that it's made me very lazy about fixing my Thorens TD 160! Maybe I'll get to it over the break, but this Toshiba is really all I need.

From what I can see from the pic, the table itself looks like it's in decent condition. And if it plays well, then yeah, it would be great for the shed. If you do decide to trash it, though, I could use the headshell!

Well, he wrote this, and I panicked!

haha, i guess i should explain...wish i had taken a photo of how bad it was before i cleaned it up.....i actually purchased this as part of a deal, i picked up 500 7" singles, ranging from 50's to 80's a very complete collection of number one hits.......unfortuanetly thay had been stored very poorly in a shed, bloody criminal actually and such a shame....well heres the bad bit the dark pile of audio gear and records were covered in rat juice!!!....i have 500 of the best records i have ever layed hands on and they are rancid with rat slime!.......the toshiba tt had a mountain of crap and dirt and piss all over it.......:thumbsdn:.....i didnt want to take it...didnt want to touch it! but i did as i wanted them records bad!...so yeah i got it home took the lid platter and rubber matt and dropped them in a bucket of super germ kill....then washed with hose...the bad stuff has seaped right through and the bottom chassis cover is warped and yuk....have not taken that of yet....but looking at it i would say although it works....it needs completely rebuilt....new power and rca leads, new bottom cover, new dust cover, new hinges....
