Transmission Line Speakers, do you like them?

I'm using a pair of DIY TL sub woofers taken directly from a design by Nelson Pass and published on the Pass DIY site. It took me awhile to get the amount of stuffing in the tubes correct. After getting that right I've been more than satisfied with their performance.

No ****. You built the el Pipo? I've long been curious about those. Did you post a thread on the project?

I have a pair of the Tritrix from Parts Express and personally, don't care for them. I only still have them because they were a gift. I am going to play around with the stuffing some more, but I don't think it will change them enough to change my mind.

PMC has had a great deal of sucess with the Transmission Line Design. Their larger Standmounts produce the Clean Tight Deep bass one would expect from a high end Floorstander, as do there Smaller, easy to handle Towers. Overall, in there price range there is much compitetion, most of which use a standard Ported type cabinet that do a fine job too.

Proper Implementation of the Transmission line in a speaker's Design I think will produce splendid results. I believe it is a more effecient in terms of Bass/Cu. Ft. vs either Ported, or Accoustic suspension designs providng many of the benefits of both, with minimal comprimises. I'm a Bit surprised more Brands don't jump on board...perhaps I'm missing something.

I found whats missing...that proper Implementation I mentioned is complex. "The cross-sectional area of the tube is typically comparable to the cross-sectional area of the driver's radiating surface area. This cross section is typically tapered down to approximately 1/4 of the starting area at the terminus or open end of the line". This might explain the mixed results people have with Transmission Line speakers.

Perhaps a Kit, with or without the Cabinet, or at least Very Specific Plans that include Driver recomendations would work for you. Check the reviews of these finished products first. It might be a fun project if your handy with woodworking tools.

Building T-lines are quite an endeavor.

Enclosed are examples of some the T-lines I have built. These were designed by I.M. Fried.

Each of my sub enclosures use a 10" driver and have a line lenght of 10.4 feet.
The response is flat to 20hz.

Each of my mid bass enclosures use a 6.5" driver and have a line length of 3.9 feet.

Many people designing T-lines fail to factor into the design the affect the inductors have in the response curve.
The added Re does raise the driver Qts..

Hey sm19422, at what freq. Does your mid bass roll off with that cab. Design? That design looks kind of interesting, I book marked it. How about more info about them. Drivers used, crossover design etc?

I've built a few dig t-lines. I was impressed with all of them and how they can squeeze the bass out of speakers that sealed or ported boxes can't. I only use one pair currently in the bedroom. They were designed by nelson pass and use the no longer available pioneer 'bofu' 8" woofer...plenty of smooth bass! You'd be surprised how much bass you can squeeze from a pair of 3" drivers. You'll get the most bass out of them, but you'll lose the ability to play them to their limit, in regards to volume. The pass t-lines however, will shake walls. Ill upload some pics when I get to a desktop pc.

Nice work! After all these years listening to everything from small sealed boxes to 15" eviction notice coffin sized speakers with ports I'm finding myself wanting a speaker with tighter clearer bass. Most of what I've been listening to recently is blues, jazz, fusion, blue grass. Along with lots of various guitar artists. TL's just seemed like a good fit for what I'm into right now. I'm even thinking of getting another ST70 tube amp.

Ever consider a Danley style tapped horn? I've heard quite a few and they can sound very good. No direct radiation though so I think they're only suited as subwoofers.

Always wanted to hear a pair of JBL Aquarius but no JBL Dealer I went to had a pair for demo.
There were several versions of the Aquarius over the years. Some better than others.

AFAIK, none of the JBL Aquarius designs were transmission line, and most all of them sounded "different" "odd" due to the fact they were designed for surround sound or diffuse soundfield. Not what most people were looking for from JBL.

Yeah, but from the pictures I've seen, they made really good plant stands!

T-line speakers.org has some good information about design.

I have a pair of big MLTL speakers and the bass is always a wonderment, it digs very low. I also built a pair of backloaded horns that are more of a T-line in effect than a horn (or so said the designer). The latter have a Fostex 4" driver and are more suited to a small space and those that don't need a slam in the chest.

Are you sure they weren't Transmission Line? It's been many years since I looked at them in my JBL folder.

I built them before I "discovered" AK. Mine are pretty much the same as in the Pass DIY article except for being scaled down to 12" woofers. Fortunately my room has 9' ceilings.

It took some experimenting and tweaking to get the right amount of stuffing. Thanks to a hot glue gun and monofilament I was able to tune them properly.

Thanks for the link! :thmbsp:

I've heard some I think sounded good and some bad. Execution is more important than type.

Yes...

(And don't forget about the Wharfedales for that style of music... ;) )

[jazz, electric jazz, blues, fusion and rock... Some blue grass as well]
