Hi folks
I just bought a Heathkit TC2 off the Bay in “working” condition. Yes it works but the gauge does not have a full range. Found this out by trying to line set the indicator needle. At first I couldn’t get it to line up. After adjusting the front screw I could get it to line up but there is still only a small bit of range. So I bought the manual and am going over voltages as well as visually checking resistors etc. Not sure if it’s a mechanical problem yet or a voltage problem. Any real world experience on these little guys?

I have no experience with them but, just as with vintage amps, you should check to see if the various resistors, caps, etc are still in spec and replace as necessary. Since these were (I assume, being a Heathkit) built as kits the manual should be helpful and easy to follow.

A quick search yielded this link. I didn't read it all but it looks like it might be helpful. A more detailed search might lead to more info.

yup. just got through servicing the one I use and was having the same issue. replaced resistors associated with calibration, diodes, caps were good from last service several years ago. the large power cement resistors were off, so replaced those too. still had issues with the meter needle aligning...two diodes that were placed in the meter to save it, were fried. now it's working as intended. lubrication/ cleaning. solder reflow. all a pain. thing's old... needs tlc.

Just a quick update.
Pretty much every resistor is leaking 20-35%. The 75k 1 w wasn’t even soldered in. Nice mechanical loop but no solder. Oops.
I’ll get all that replaced and give it another test.
