Universal remote for yamaha stereo

I have a Yamaha RX-V1200 AV Stereo with a malfunctioning volume knob, it works but it's hard to adjust the volume. The replacement remote on ebay is $60-$80, not worth it to me... because I just want the stereo for it's basic purposes to turn the volume up correctly.

I saw that you can buy universal remotes and program infrared codes to them. But I'm having a hard time finding one for this particular model make. Any help pointing me to a cheap remote that could work with this model / make would greatly be appreciated.

If all you need is volume control you might try any TV/cable/satellite/DVD/VCR remote that allows you to program in a code to control the volume on a receiver. Free is hard to beat if you have a spare one in the junk drawer.

Any universal remote with an Audio function will be able to handle Yamaha codes. Manufacturers typically use the same codes for years, on all of their models for a particular type of component (e.g. receiver). And if you have a smartphone, some of them can act as a remote using an inexpensive or free app.

Thanks for the responses everyone...I tried programming a universal remote, found a set of 20 codes for this particular unit online to use, but none of them worked. I even tried the auto code search on the remote...no go. Gonna return it.

I saw a YT video on how to set up a bluetooth adapter with the stereo, control it with my iphone. But is there a way to set up a wifi connection, possibly hook it up with an ethernet cable to my router, using some type of wifi ethernet adapter method?

This is a pretty old receiver and I have my doubts that it has bluetooth built in, and there are no ethernet or wifi connections either (FWIW, I can control my Yamaha RX-V679 with my iPad over wifi, but it's significantly newer than yours). Very surprised that the universal remote didn't work. I've used older Yamaha remotes on that receiver (I bought it without a remote) without issue.

You can pick up a new Harmony Hub on eBay for $30 shipped. This will allow you to use your smartphone as a remote (and will control other devices at the same time). I have yet to find a device that is not in Harmony's database (which is continually updated). Otherwise you can look out for a Harmony 350 or 650 on sale (I've gotten the 350 for $10 and 650 for $15, refurbished). Note that the 350 has limited functionality since it has no screen.

ETA: one additional thought: maybe the Yamaha's IR receiver isn't working.

I ordered a remote for my Nakamichi RE-10 here: https://www.replacement-remote.com/

They program their remote to work on your particular unit. (it has a mini usb inside for that purpose)
Based in China, takes a long time to ship but it works as advertised.
About $15.

Thanks for the detailed response, I’ll check out your options. The stereo had the original remote but it had been chewed up by my brothers dog. Some of the buttons worked when testing to see if the stereo even accepted the remote functionality, but the volume didn’t.

The Harmony hub system is what I use and it runs my older RX-V receiver. I use both the smartphone app and the Elite remote. The hub itself is a lot less $ than the hub+Elite if you want to use just the smartphone app. It's a pretty slick setup, really. The online configuration tool works pretty well too, to put in the gear and set up routines.

One additional nice thing about the Harmony Hub remotes (note that the 350 and 650 I mentioned above are not Hub remotes) is that once you find a good position for the Hub, you don't need to worry about pointing the remote at a component. Just press the button on the remote or your phone, and the Hub does the rest. It also includes an IR blaster so you can hide some components in a cabinet and still access them.

Have you disassembled and cleaned your original remote itself? That has worked on a few occasions for me.

Perhaps a remote from a “lesser” Yamaha receiver of the same vintage might work. I picked up a RX-V3000 w/o a remote, but an old Yamaha remote I just happened to have was able to adjust volume and change inputs just fine until I could get the original. Just a thought...

I have the Harmony 600. It has controlled both my older Yamaha's and the newest one, plus every other piece of equipment that I have throughout the house that uses a remote.

The 600 is an older version of 650.

Yes, that is correct. At least from that series up, they should all work. Not sure one could even get the 600's anymore actually. The 600 series is a bit laggy even after updating, so eventually I'll replace it.

All great suggestions, thanks.

I'm with swechsler on the universal remote, really weird how it was unable to program. Could it be possible that this stereo just doesn't accept universal remote programming? This was the "cheapy" I bought:

https://www.target.com/p/philips-6-device-universal-remote-control-black/-/A-53248044

I really want to find that out for certain before paying $20-$30 for a HUB or a remote. Every $ counts these days, I know I sound like a "cheapy" but I'm a huge fan of cost effective results.

Just for S&G, I tried a 2007 and a 2013 remote on my 2001 Yammy receiver; both controlled volume and input change.
If you can pick up an old Yamaha receiver remote for cheap, you might just make out ok.

I have tinkered with only two remote controls innards in my entire audio life. One I destroyed, the other I fixed. So I'm with Mrv8q on disassembling; worth a shot, if for no other purpose than to get it working as you consider other options.

Then, you might be waiting a long time that someone will come along and just happen to have an RX-V1200 missing the remote and has run a Hub (or whatever).

As I mentioned before, Harmony's compatibility tool says they work with RX-V1200. If not, then I guess you have solid grounds for return since their tool says it does.

Maybe you'd care to check the Harmony compatibility tool for yourself and see if you draw the same conclusion.
