University 312 Diffaxial in ? cabs

I just picked these up Sunday. Needed a new project like a whole in the head, but I really liked the cabs and the price was right.

They (single pictured) contain the University 312 Diffaxial 3-way drivers. A bass reflex design that my guess would be approx. 3 cu-ft internal volume.

The cabs are not badged University.

Anyone ever come across a cabinet like this? I was thinking that if the 312's were not to my liking, I could put a pair of EV 12TRXb's I have kicking around in them after re-tuning. Not nearly enough volume to get any serious bass out of the 12TRXb's but might be interesting to try.

Sweet! The cabinets look nicer than the pictures in the CL ad. Do both of the tweeters work? The cabinets are definitely cool.

Hey Denny, I will know soon. Just hauled them in tonight.

I really think its a cap or L-pad issue on the one but who knows. The owner was upfront about the lack of HF out of the one driver but didn't know what to do about it.

It might be cooked but I hope not. I have always wanted to hear these.

You did good. I LOVE the cabinet design. I wonder why he got rid of them? It looked like they matched everything in his house from what I could tell in the pics. They must be custom cabinets then if they aren't marked.

Good luck with them. That was a sweet deal.

What size driver is that? And bottom ported? Those are cool.

Kelly, the driver is a 12" and they are bottom ported. Thats where the HF level is also.

The driver is mounted on a secondary baffle which leads me to believe that these cabs might of been available with different arrangements. Not University I bet, more of a furniture deal.

I just NEEDED the cabs and couldn't walk away.

Just a sucker for retro styling I guess :D

Real cool looking cabinets.

Get the tweeter issue fixed and I think yo may be surprised at what you get for sound from them.

You are right about the furniture deal on the cabinets. My parents bought a set like this for the living room in about 1960. Almost the exact shape and size as these, with triangular legs. Very Danish Modern. Speakers at either end, bottom ported. Dad put Jensens in them. There were two, double-wide cabinets that went between the speakers, with sliding doors, where you put your gear and records. They are walnut veneered. Mom still has the whole set, in fact I'm refinishing the tops because too many plants leaked on them. I measured a cabinet last winter and it was about 2.5 cu ft. internal volume. Heavy suckers too.

Nice find!

Sweet Heathkit cabs !!!

It was love at first site when I saw mine.
Picked up an empty pair at Kutztown last year.

Do yours have the pretty green dots in the grille cloth?

They are the same design as the Heathkit Legato cabs/AS-21's,
only a miniature version.

Nice cabs with a 15" baffle cut out and 12" adapter,
horn cutout covered with plywood.

Threaded inserts for mounting drivers too.

Threw a pair of 12" Norelco AD 4277M's in mine for now,
sound sweet!

Great find,retro at its best!

Enjoy.....

Cheers,
Barry

Thanks.

That's them Barry. All the way down to the baffle adaptors, horn cutout and the green in the grillecloth.

RC, those are cool... kinda. I do know for certain that my wife would hang me if I brought something like that home, though. Very interesting.

If they oust the Tannoys, please call me first.

Hang you for those? :scratch2: Wow, tough crowd at your home.
I think the Tannoy's are safe.

Heathkit? :scratch2:

Is the front baffle removable?

You know, I really didn't look beyond the noting that the baffle adaptor was removable. The baffle itself was prep'ed for a 15" driver of some kind and the adaptor for a 12". I will have to investigate further the next time I "go in".
