Uturn orbit Vs. Debut Carbon DC

If we take an example of a common VTF, like 2gf. Using the right amont of AS will yield about the same groove force on both channels, in this case Sqr2 gf.
If we don´t use any AS instead the groove force will be, with common figures used, left channel 1.8gf, right channel 1.0 gf. That means, with normal variations of VTF, the right channel can easily be close to zero in VTF.
So if not mistracking, it can be close to mistracking.

The choice of turntable isn't simple, it can be dictated by where you live as seen here in this thread by AK members who reside in Europe where the U-Turn isn't sold. Even in America, shipping to Canada can involve higher cost. Cost, availability and the mfgs service/support/warranty are big factors when considering turntables all based on where you live. The OP living in the USA for all practical purposes would be best served by the U-Turn Orbit.

99% of the time when an owner 'tweaks' or mods a piece of audio equipment it will sound better to his ears... I think you guys know what I mean

From what I've read, the U-Turn doesn't need motor tweaks

Please, bare in mind it's the mod on the older or the first model of Debut Carbon!

DC version (from the title of thread) is already well improved and without these issues. No mods of any kind necessary, except if one wants acrylic platter or better cart.

cheers

To be clear here, this is going to be a second turntable. For use in one of the downstairs rooms. My main table a reference series Marantz TT-15S1 is upstairs on my better system.

I had purchased one of the old debut carbons, and had multiple issues with them, as well as with the rpm 1.3.

Both where buzzing and humming like crazy. This was a long time ago. Eventually, I received a working turntable, but ultimately decided that I wanted to upgrade to the TT-15s1. So I returned it.

I am really somewhat torn. In comparing the debut carbon DC, to the Uturn Orbit, upgraded with the grado blue1 cartridge, and the acrylic platter, and the queing lever. (which is a mandatory thing for me.) the cost is identical. However, with the uturn I get the added benefit of the acrylic platter. Which would cost another 150 on top of the debut.

I had the Pro-Ject Carbon and eventually old it because of platter issue. The Pro-Ject Debut platter attracts MC carts like a refrigerator attracts magnets. If you ever plan on using a MC, upgrading to the acrylic platter is a must, adding more money to a otherwise-good-but-still-entry-level turntable. If I were ever going to build a second system, I'd go for the U-turn w/acrylic platter, cue lever and then use a Que-Up for autolift at the end of records.

EDIT: Just to add that I didn't have any motor issues with my Debut. I'd like to think that's a solved issue for them.

So, now that the uturn has been out for a while, and project's turn table has been remodeled, I am interested in which one will honestly sounds better.

I like the fact that you can get a manual table with a Grado Blue1 with an acrylic platter for $400 from uturn. Where as the acrylic platter for the Debut adds another 130 to a $500 price tag.

the included cartridges seem to review similarly. What are your thoughts?

I am curious, did you ever buy the u-turn? If so, how do you like it? How did it compare to the Project, (and to the your Marantz for that matter). I am looking at one and would like you thoughts.

Thanks

I've been using a U-turn for over six month now with only one real issue. The cueing lever is a bit clunky, not a huge deal, but it shouldn't shift the arm over a bit when dropped. As for speed, it runs at 33 1/3 like it should. Some have said theirs was off a bit. Mine is quiet, no hum. I did buy the acrylic platter and the Ortofon 5E cartridge, but no on board preamp. Its been a good TT while I hunt down what I really want to get.

Thanks, obviously there are lots of better one's, but this is going to be as good as I get. I am looking at the + with the acrylic platter and the Grado Black1 cartridge. I will probably upgrade the cartridge when the needle needs replacement, I like the reviews on this one.

We have the U-turn with a Grado Gold1 Longhorn mounted to it. It performs very well. BTW, the arm actually does have anti-skating. It is a fixed amount and with our blank testing disc, produces acceptable anti-skate for the Grado.Picture 005.jpg
