Value of CR-2020 and CR-2040

What is a fair price for the CR 2020 and 2040? Both of these are on local craigslist and have been for several weeks and I feel they are likely overpriced but I would love to give a vintage Yamaha a try, but don't want to overpay. I am not looking for the ultimate "score" just a fair price. Anything in particular I should be checking for if I do go look at them?

Thanks..

Those are the ones. Undecided on whether to contact the seller or not, especially since they are priced well above average.

The 2040 is a great one.

I've owned mine for years and only problem has been a couple of light bulbs going out...

I don't think I'd pay more than $450 for one.

There are threads on a heat sink mod for these era Yamaha receivers... one of the transistors could use a little heat help. These are GREAT units... I've had their smaller brothers, and the sound is sooooo nice! I'd put the value a little higher, at up to $500, if the 2040 is mint. These are not all that common on CL, so you'll have to risk buying and shipping on ebay, if you want to try and save a few bucks. I've only seen one 2020 and one 1020 on my CL... several of the 6xx and 8xx models, but anything 10xx and above are more rare.

Ya know... anytime I try and point this out in the speaker forum, other members complain that I'm just bitching. I'm surprised the solid state forum is more aware and accepting of the forum rules. I'm glad to see some others like me!

I love my 2040!! I purchased mine off CL and got a great deal. Replaced a couple lamps and cleaned the face plate and pots and she sounds wonderful. Only thing I have found is matching speakers is a challenge. I currently have some Klipsch KLF30's and they sound amazing hooked up to the Yammie. Don't think you could go wrong with either. Best of luck.

Bought my CR-2020 from CL maybe six years ago. It has proven to be a wonderful receiver. They do not come up for sale often around here.

2040 IMO is the better model- i refurbed both and the 2020 was the receiver that "has" issues, the 2040 is the one that doesn't. Multiple service bulletins on the 2020 and the fact that it cooks itself in stock form leaves it to be a service issue- broken traces are common on the 2020 PS board. I just redid a 2040, much better design, newer design and with a good parts list the 2040 can be made to sound better than the 2020- this is my opinion of course. The 2020 is prettier, i'll give it that.

I'm testing the one I rebuilt on klipsch quartets, good fit for the yammy.

I owned a 2040. It sounded a bit dry for my ears but nonetheless a great receiver.

One thing to remember: they are very wide and deep. You won't be able to put this receiver in a rack and they have a big footprint.
