Hey all,

I'm looking to buy a variac and until recently all I've found have been quite expensive. I found this today though, so I would appreciate any help deciding whether it would be sufficient for my needs - working on receivers / amps in the 100 watt range, nothing exotic.

That will suffice for quite a few. You can even use it on larger amps. What people don't realize is that at idle anything except for large tube or class A amplifiers usually draw about 100 watts or less at idle. The trick is to use wall current (skip the variac) when doing high powered testing. My setup is a 300 VA var8ac with a dim bulb tester - make sure everything is okay, then bypass the bulb, then if everything is still good, bypass the variac. YMMV
