Hello All.

This is another one of those "What sounds similar to this" threads. This is my first post on AK and Im not sure about how these types of posts are taken, so forgive me if im violating the rules.

here goes.

about 2 years ago i stumbled upon this, http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.557765, Villa lobos: Chamber music
(dont laugh, i cant afford anything other than the naxos lables.)

i think some of the tracs here are some of the best pieces of chamber music that ive ever heard. teh people at my local music store think im stupid for liking this because its too modern and only recommend mozart. infact they dont like villa lobos at all.

ive not heard anything that sounds quite like this style. has anybody here heard this before, can anybody recommend something that sounds similar to this style.

any help would be appreciated.

dufus.

OUCH - I sent an email to the admins when there was a glitch in the Matrix. Came back online pretty quick. Hope not too much was lost at this time of the night/morning.

:sigh:

So... if you're looking for classical guitar composers... I stumbled across several LPs of late. Here are some of the composers I remember just listing:

(Here's a link btw http://www.musicated.com/CGCL/music/CGCL_az.html)

Behrend (I have a DG LP - works for solo guitar aka Werke Solo-Gitarre)
Sor
Granados (there's a Naxos disc of his -- Goyescas and El Pelele -- I don't care for the sonics but that can be looked past...)
Rodrigo
de Falla
Escudero

Hope this helps

A) Naxos is good. No laughing matter.

B) Chamber works by: Carl-Maria Von Weber, Eric Satie, Claude DeBussey, or members of Les Six:

* Louis Durey (1888–1979)
* Arthur Honegger (1892–1955)
* Darius Milhaud (1892–1974)
* Germaine Tailleferre (1892–1983)
* Georges Auric (1899–1983)
* Francis Poulenc (1899–1963)

I recommend more Villa-Lobos! He was a very prolific composer from Brazil. He is an Icon there and respected and admired worldwide. Sounds like the record store guys are very narrow minded. As far as I am concerned, If you picked up on the genius of Villalobos, than you have an ear for graet music.

There is an outstanding re-release of an old Everest label recording of the Little Train of Capaira. His most famous peices are his Bachianas Brasilieras, and his Guitar Etudes are much loved and recorded. Recordings of his music can be found on budget labels easily.

Im familiar with Satie and DeBussy. I'll check out Von Webber and Les Six when I get a chance. i have a feeling i might enjoy the Les Six composers

I also have an EMI Classics release of some of his orchestral works. Some from Bachianas brasileiras, some chamber orchestra and some other instrumentals. I enjoyed those as well. Ive also really enjoyed whatever little classical guitar ive heard of his. That record store has quite a few of his symphonies. I want to get my hands on those soon.

The guy at the record store seems quite knowledgable. I suppose it was a matter of personal taste. other favourites of mine that they didnt like were some of Phillippe Gauberts transcripts for piano and flute and Korngolds violin concerto played by heifitz.

Give a listen to the Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo: noted for his composition: CONCIERTO DE ARANJUEZ, a concerto for guitar and orchestra.
