That listing had been mentioned in another thread- I was somewhat perplexed by the build dates being 7 months apart and the finishes which appear to be two completely different stains.

The certainly look beautiful to be sure, but I wonder how potential suitors will feel about the color issue. Maybe it's just the lighting..? :dunno:

They are pretty but it's to bad they are singles from two different sets. They offered they were made in 3 different grains/colors. I saw this listing on another site and someone posts some ad info on them listing the color choices.

They would have never been sold together as a pair.

40,000 can buy me some real real nice sounding modern speakers that would keep me in audio bliss for a real real long time!

Put together pair. Nice but at that price, id want a true "pair".

My original thoughts.

That has to hurt the pair from a value standpoint.

Mostly mono (good point) they did have early stereo tape and even more rare binaural
records then .

I don't recall speakers sold in pairs in the early 50's vintage catalogs I've seen on line but then like now if have the dough you can get two of anything.

At first I thought the color difference might have been lighting but after reading the replies and taking a second look it's obvious they do like like two different mismatched finishes.
It does make sense as most sets were mono then also large gap between ser.#s indicates a non match.

Yup ! .

Nope! .

I've seen german stereo systems from 1954. Here's a magnacorder stereo amp from 1951 (model PT6-BN) that was used with binarural reel to reel. There were commercial tapes and LPs in stereo by 1955 so someone had stereo systems. Might have been mostly theaters and such, I don't know. But to say systems were all mono in '55 would be incorrect.

I vaguely remember the big mono sell off from the early 60's although I was very young at the time.

With regards to the topic at hand, I suppose if one were to conjure the image of who would have been an early adopter of stereo that same person would likely have been at least an appropriate buyer of the speakers. Still, I'd imagine that the overwhelming majority of these speakers sold in 1955 were for a mono application.

JBL Hartsfields on the bay (some good pictures ) $39,999.95
way over my speaker budget .

What a coincidence. I just looked at a used skid steer up the street. 660 hours and priced at $38,000. Way over my skid steer budget.

Never say never. While probably not advertised as a pair back then, there is absolutely nothing that would have prevented a single customer from ordering two, or even more of these speakers in identical wood/grill cloth finishes.

My 1954 Klipschorn has (had) an identical twin floating around. Per the Klipsch records the components and finish were the same, and they were sequential serial numbers. Wish I owned the mate....

But those two aren't identical so I will say they would never have been sold as a pair. Two completely different finishes and completely different manufacturing times. The older one was probably shipped off and sold before the second one was even manufactured. This is a made pair as someone already said this was never an original pair.

Oh sorry, I realize now you were talking about the two in the OP. Yeah... for sure those were never sold as, nor in any manner could be considered a matching pair !
