Vintage Amps

It's one person's opinion, though. If you can, give the amp a listen yourself.

I know there are very different estimates of Luxman, during and after the Alpine period. Unfortunately, I have yet to hear them and form my own judgement.
It's a 4 hour plus drive , he has a video snip-it but pretty hard to judge just by that however there are a few youtube video's for this power amp, don't usally find that when researching equipment, but again hard to judge. The specs are decent with 125wpc @ 8ohms , THD 0.003% , Damping Factor 120 , 126DB , 10Hz-100KHz

@SG19 Were I looking to buy new, I'd consider one of the Odyssey amps discussed here. Odyssey Amp thread There are a few models available, with this being their basic. Khartago Stereo Amplifier - Odyssey Audio

For used, consider becoming a subscribing member (click on subscribe in the upper header) which gives you access to Barter Town, a subscriber only forum where member buy, sell and trade with each other. Mostly audio, but there are other categories. Cost is $25 per year, which helps to keep the lights on here.

In the past few months, I've purchased 2 amps on BT (Adcom GFA 545 & Threshold Forte 3A), at very reasonable prices.

I would stay away from SAE amplifiers. Turn your head and BANG! Only good when working like anything else.

I've had a Crown D150A sitting on a shelf for years because I was afraid to hook it up to a pair of speakers. Yesterday I tested it for DC, only .009v and .006v so I hooked it up to a scope and got clean and equal sine waves from both channels. Hooked it up to my JBL 4311B's and was very impressed with the sound. I like it better than my Hafler 220.

The Hafler has great bass and is smoother up top, but the Crown has a liveliness that is more engaging.

...Speakers are going to be SVS Primes or maybe Energy Connoisseur, Totem Acoustics, or if I can swing the price tag 2 sets of Technics sb-7070's (3000)...

I know nothing about newer Energy speakers, but I have a pair of Connoisseur C-9s and they are easy to drive.

The only reason I got started with separates was a pair of hard to drive Infinitys. If I were going to use the C-9s as my main speakers I'd probably be satisfied with an integrated amp and not even have separates.

That said, I've had a couple of Acurus amps, a couple of Aragons, and several Crowns and several Yamahas. I think Yamahas deserve more credit than they get.
