Vintage Cerwin Vega

mhconley

The Dude Abides
I am really hoping some of you Cerwin Vega fans can help me out.

When I moved out of my parent's house at 19 years of age back in 1978 I purchased a pair of 12" 3-way floor standing Cerwin Vega speakers directly through Cerwin Vega. (My father was in the electronics industry in Southern California and had connections that knew people at Cerwin Vega. Remember Kraco?) These were stolen :tears: in the early-to-mid 1980's and I got another pair of 12" 3-way bookshelf Cerwin Vega's that were OK, but nothing like the original pair. I think the second pair was in the D line. The first pair was in a brochure that I used to have (Still hope to have it tucked away somewhere; if I find it I'll post a scan.) that also showed the 12TR's and a 15" 3-way floor stander from the generation prior to the D-9. I think the 15-incher may have been the H-15 and the 12-incher, the W-12, but I am not sure. They were not in the HED line; they were Cerwin Vega's best line at the time.

I would love to find pictures of the W-12, H-15 or any other floor standing Cerwin Vega speakers from the mid-to-late 1970's. And I would really love to find a pair of the 15" 3-way floor standing speakers that I have lusted after since my youth.

Thanks for any help...

geespot sent me scans of a brochure containing the 211/217 models and the D-series. Looks like these are from immediately prior to and immediately after the pair for which I am looking.

The D-series brochure did not show my second pair which contained the identical components as in the D-5 only in a bookshelf box (no toe-kick stand). Perhaps a D-4 model?

Anyway, I now think the 12" 3-way floor standing model I originally had may have been the 312. Maybe, maybe not. Anyone have pictures of a 312? 313? 317?

More please - c'mon CV fans - I know you're out there. :thmbsp:

Sounds like you had one of the "Hardrocker" series. 312, 317-R etc. these all had real walnut cabinets. These came out after I quit selling audio, so I do not have any info.

Sorry, I don't have any info on that model, however if you send an e-mail to cerwin vega they may be able to help. I've tried them a couple of times in the past on vintage models and they've been very responsive.

Good luck

Ah-hah! Progress.

Yes, my original speakers were real walnut, not vinyl - absolutely beautiful furniture quality finish. Now if I can only see a picture of a 312 I'll know for sure. Was the 317-R the a 15" 3-way? If so, that's the speaker I seek...

I've got the real-wood (walnut) HED CV-3000s. Well built cabs for sure.

My friend picked up a pair of 'em recently too.

I'm going to refoam both pair, and we'll be stacking them for hoots and hollers.

Very efficient (loud) speakers for sure.

Yes the 317-R was a 15" three way with a 6 1/2" cone mid and a horn tweeter on the front and back (hence the "R" designation). I beleive the 312 had a 12" woofer.

My 317-R's have 15" woofers with two horn mids (one front and one back) also have a horn tweeter. Cabs are walnut veneer.

The store I worked for had the CV 317-P model that looked exactly like yours(except they had pink surrounds). The woofers were L-152 with a 7 lb. magnet (cheaper than the L-153 with the 13 lb. mag). Did you re-foam the surrounds? The original version of the 317-R had the 6 1/2" MF-61 midrange with a 4 lb. magnet and the large crossover plate with level controls was on the front. It also had a grille that was not flat but went to a point in the middle.

Thanks for the photos of the 317-R's John. Now that I see them I am beginning to doubt myself. :headscrat

I searched high and low for the brochure I had showing the 12TR's and several other pairs including my original 12" 3-way floor standing speakers and the 15" 3-ways I am seeking but could find it nowhere.

The speakers I seek had a short, what I call "toe-kick" like the D-9's; my original 12 inchers did, too.

The second set of 12" 3-ways I had did not.

I am beginning to think that maybe my first set were D-9's except I cannot explain the year difference - I know I got them in 1978 or 1979 very soon after moving out of my parents house.

Oh well - still searching...

Martin, I have a brochure from 1979, entitled, "Cerwin Vega....High Fidelity Speaker Systems." It's a 3-way fold-out and has the 12TR, along with a number of other walnut veneered speakers. The 12 incher with the "toe-kick" as you call it is the 313. It uses a 12" woofer, crossed over at 700 hz to a 6" midrange, which crosses over at 3500 hz to a 1" voice coil horn. I think that may be the speaker you had. The only 15 incher in the brochure is the 316R, which has a 1" horn mounted toward the rear.
I'll see what I can do about scanning it and posting it.
Hope this helps. :D

Way cool!!! :thmbsp:

That's the brochure I had; it was a 3 way fold-out. Anxiously awaiting a scan. Now I think we're on to something. Thanks!

Martin, I scanned the brochure, but the images are too large to upload (I really have no idea what I'm doing!)..........but if you PM me your e-mail address, I'll send them to you via e-mail (I know how to do that.)
Hope I can be of help. :D

Can't make out any of the writing, what is the speaker in the left pic under the other one? Wouldn't be an S-1 would it? Looks like beveled ends on that speaker and the aluminium tweeter.

Yes, it's an S-1. If you click on the pics, they should get larger....and the writing should be legible. At least it works for me. As I said, I really have no clue about scanning and uploading images. :(

They work for me! I appreciate the effort. This is the brochure I had and the information I was seeking.

I now know, definitively, that:
1. I owned a pair of 313's (stolen in the early 80's :tears: )
2. I am seeking a pair of 316R's (always lusted after these speakers  )

Thanks!

Incidentally, I also once owned a pair of 12TR's in the late 80's that I purchased used. I can't remember what happened to those. I think I may have resold them in the early 90's. Those were great speakers, too. Wouldn't mind finding a pair of them in good condition either... :headscrat
