Vintage Mongoose BMX

I have been looking for a good bike for my grandson for a while. I saw this mongoose, and just couldn’t resist. I’ve rebuilt BMX bikes in the mid 80s, but haven’t really dabbled with them aside from that. I lean towards touring and mountain bike for my own needs.

I am hoping there will be someone who can tell me a little about this one. The year, what if anything is special, etc so I can tell my grandson about it.

It’s a beautiful bike! I love the two tone tire rims and the orange gear!

I wanted to add that I have searched through hundreds of photos of different mongoose and the closest I found was a 1984 Pro model. I believe it has the 72 spokes on the wheel rims. It also has non tangling break cables. Very cleverly done too, I might add.

Early to mid 80's was my era too, that one looks later, like mid 90's or so.
I was outta the bmx scene by then so I cant help much @ all, sorry.

Ditto this.

Doesn’t look like a 80’s Mongoose.
Mongoose also sold out in the 90’s so they aren’t as wanted/valuable as the 80’s Californians with Skyways.

man I miss freestylin on my 80’s bikes, Mongoose, GT, Haro, and Hutch

Thanks for the help. So I’ll start targeting late 80s early 90s to see if I can find something similar. I stopped at 85.

In a way, I’m glad it isn’t the more valuable, because it would involve extra things to worry about. But my picker mind always wants the more valuable kind.

Anybody remember Kuwahara or DG bikes? How about Redline or PK Ripper?
A good buddy of mine in HS had a Kuwahara,it was a really nice bike for sure.

Redlines were all over back then too, those got stolen a lot as everyone wanted the flight cranksets and proline necks/handlebars.

SE racing was the be-all/end-all 'round these parts back then, but the PK Ripper took a backseat to the Quad Angle.
The SE Racing Quad Angle was THE bike to have around here if you wanted to be considered a true BMX badass.
Few could afford them though,so most just lusted after them, and you could'nt steal one either as they were too unique so easy to spot.

Had a few, started w/a CYC Stormer, modified that some, bought a Race Inc. aluminum frame, that did'nt work out as planned (broke it).
In the interim I got a Diamondback frame/forks from a friend who had upgraded to newer/lighter rig (dont recall the brand/model off-hand).
After that I picked up a Ross 10 speed as I needed something that was easier to ride across town on as I was getting older (and partying more LOL).

Since then I've bought a couple Diamondback 24".first was a chrome Assault, let my niece use that and it got stolen.
Currently own a Diamondback Session in Bronze/Black vvvv.

Primary use was as a pit bike, but I had to get rid of the race car & rig so now it mostly just sits in the basement.
It needs a tube too,me I could use some excersize,LOL,got the time, but next to no money.

Sigh,,,I digress for now...

Maybe Rebel, but they look to have a fatter downtube ?

I agree! I also found a Californian Pro that was similar in terms of profile, but done differently. I was hoping to see mine as an evolutionary step, but so far up to the year 2000, and no luck. What is driving me nuts is I had a page open with the same bike as mine, and then closed it. Now I can’t find it. :(

I will probably post on the bmxmuseum. They seem to have the largest quantity of information on them. So far I’m still striking out, although I’ve seen hybrids. Like you say, the rebel down tube is much fatter. Mine has a tapered downtube like a 2007 rogue, but a seat/rear wheelbar/crossbar intersection like a 2009 Rebel.

Well, it seems my grandson is a little nervous to ride a bike. He’s grown up in a high rise and my daughter has no storage space there. So I found another Mongoose! This is about perfect for his size. He’s 10 years old.
