VINYL - why do some records have drill holes etc?

i know it's a stupid question, but i couldn't find the answer.

why do some records have drill holes on the actual vinyl (usually 45's) near the center hole?

why do some records have drill holes in the cover (usually 12" lp's) in the top right hand corner, or sometimes other corner?

why do some records have notches cut or saw outs in the corner (usually 12" lp's) in the corner?

thanks

These are called cut-outs.. ones that are sold cheap because they didn't move at normal prices.. .. they drill the 45 because there is no cover to cut out...

OH.. an interesting little trivia bit.. YELLO cover artwork has drill holes and corner cuts marked on them, because they said they didn't expect their albums to sell well, so they were makrking them to show where they needed to be cut or drilled.

Interesting that I've never seen a YELLO cutout in person..

Another interesting trivia bit... Gaye Bykers On Acid's first album 'Drill Your Own Hole' required it's owners to, um, drill their own hole in the centre of the record. The first 1000 copies came without a pre-drilled centre hole.

Sorry this doesn't quite answer your question, but I thought it worth mentioning :)

There was somebody selling an album on eBay who thought the saw blade-looking mark meant it was a promo.

I am sure that made for some fun. :D

Yes I have now I see one. i remember seeing many black one from mags or places. Did they come in cereal boxs too?

I remember them on the back of the box.. kinda ... you cut out the back of the box, it had the sheet glued to it.. sounded almost as bad as the cereal in the box tasted..

Hard to beleive that any of the chocolate records survived unless they were in Greenland or some such location.

I've seen the same things on CD at places like Big Lots. They have a notch cut with a hack saw in the side of the cases. I think it's so you can't buy it cheaply, and then take it back to a record store that accepts returns without a receipt and get a full retail refund. It probably also satisfies some accountant if part of their value was written off.
