scored an Voice of Music Receiver model 1498-1. Looks like this was an early solid-state receiver. Cannot seem to find much info on this model, not even at the Voice of Music website. Anyone have any info or experience on this obscure model?

Hmm you should better try it on, there's no info regarding this receiver anywhere..is really weird. :scratch2:

Well, I can purchase the user manual for seven dollars, or the service manual for thirteen dollars from www.thevoiceofmusic.com. I am curious if it is worth a restoration at this point without knowing how well it sounds. :scratch2:

looks like a cute little receiver. Worth at least getting a cap and fuse and powering it up or trying. VM tube gear was not that shabby. I suspect the receiver would be somewhere in the range of a smaller Panasonic, not outstanding but not at the bottom of the heap. VM produced some nice product for mainstream mid level hi-fi and entry level.

I found a spare fuse plug so I powered this sucker up. Lights went on, so thats a good sign. Hooked up a apair of speakers and tried the FM. Reception was very good with a strong signal with a minimal antenna. The right channel is loud and strong, but the left is very low. I have to raise it up to maximum volume just to hear it. I tried some deoxit on the pots, but no change. It is the same with FM mono and with AM. Any ideas what would cause this?

I finally got around to taking some pics. Here they are:

OUTPUT TRANNIES?

One of the 4 power transistors.

That looks like its one of their better models. Are there speaker fuses in this model? They can cause a low volume condition like you describe if one is blown.

Hmmm, now I wonder....I just noticed that of the two large black capacitors, one is riveted in and the other is not. Was one of those replaced at some point? If so, then perhaps the other has gone out now and needs to be replaced? Curious....:scratch2:
