so this might sound lame but I like the old style needle VU meters. None of my amps got it.

Are there any standalong vu meters ? something like I parallely feed the audio signals to it along with my speakers and it displays the 'vu' ?

Yes,
Radioshack had them: Audio power meter(s)
The models that I know are:
APM 100: needle
APM 200: LED

Two other RS models were:
APM-300 - LED/metal case
APM-500 - LED/plastic case

The APM-200 was a combined needle/LED unit.

Different ranges/sensitivities. Not too hard to find on eBay, CL, etc. If no one else does, I'll add model numbers, etc later today...
 
I have both the APM 100 & APM 200. The 100 is really basic, but the 200 is really nice with backlit dial & led meters. They are pretty fun.
 
Crown OC-150 and a version.

Meters three amps. One amp switched through three speakers, second amp switched through 3 headphones and third amp meters only. Peak and VU and well built Crown tough. This is one of my most recent retail purchases and based on the last two through the bay I got a deal.

Unfotunatel;y I couldnt get this sorted out yet. I would love to get something of the sort of APM 200 i.e. a passive VU meter rather then something which requires audio signal to pass thru it to to the speakers. Unfortunately cant find any apm 200's for sale now.

if not then I would rather prefer to have a equalizer set which vu meter. Any suggestions for this route ?

Its nice, the selector is for either a 2w or 200W scale, I would love to have one in the 20W range as well

I also have the APM-200, very nice but it is a power meter rather than a VU meter. The backlit analog meters show average power (RMS?) and the LED's show peak readings. They used to show up all the time on the 'Bay, but I haven't been on there much lately so maybe they are not as commonly listed now.
 
Nothing lame about VU meters. They're awesome.

The only VU meters on my stereo are on the cassette deck though.
 
Reopening the thread again. i have been looking but no luck so far....

on the net i see a lot of vu meter DIY manuals but they are all mostly for LED's. Anyone here built a needle VU meter and willing to share how to do it ?

Thanks for the quick response. I will be honest - I dont know much abt the needle vu meters other then that the needle dances with the music, indicates rms power and above all, looks cool. Must be lighted i hope.

I just want to have a standalobe vu meter I can just hookup to my speaker terimanals theyrby getting the advantage of the vu meter without passing the signals thru any extra component ...
